Lasers show up in an amazing range of products and technologies. How does it work?

Lasers are produced by amplification of light. Very simplistically, light is reflected between two mirrors which are partially transparent, and the built up energy of multiple reflections is released as a burst of laser light. Lasers could be continuous or intermittent depending on design of the instrument used for producing it.

Lasers have very high energy levels, kind of concentrated light. So they can be used to destroy satellites or burn up human tissue as in medical lasers etc.
