Polygamy: where are the people who can not have kids? email this discussion to a friend?

Last night on the Outsiders they did a story on a community that practices polygamy as I was watching I could not help but wonder where are the people who can not have children? I guess as a person who can not I notice these things. The people they were talking to said that they basically needed multiple wives and lots of kids to get to heaven. So what do they do with the people who can't? What do they think about people who can't? do they think that it is their fault? do the husbands not want them anymore?

I have no kids yet and I want to. My husband doesn't really care about it, he comes from big family so he is not desperate of having kids. If he can have one, good. If not, it's not the end of the world. I guess it's different story if the husband desperately wants a child. Henry VIII KIng of England was famous of this desperation for a son that he married and divorced so often.

I watched that too, it seems like their response to all problems was to pray, so perhaps they pray about. I suspect if a woman is infertile, then they would take care of the other wives children. I'm not a polygamist so I don't know how they would feel about infertility. I'm sickened by stories of them kicking young boys out of the community (wasn't shown on that show but others) because they needed more girls in the community to marry off, since they have multiple wives, the boys become competition for the old men who want the young girls:(

Presumably barren women get kicked out because they have no worth as child-bearers! I bet they get looked down on and made to do menial and demeaning jobs for their "sins". As a childless person I think that society in general still looks down a little on people who can't or won't have children, even in so-called "civilised" countries.

I was wondering the same thing!! I have no idea. Are those people shunned?

It seemed like the only goal of the women there was to produce offspring and serve their man.
