What's Hendry waiting for? Pay Zambrano whatever he wants!

Zambrano is the heart and soul of the Chicago Cubs. He's without question one of the best pitchers (if not, the best) in the game. He plays with heart, emotion, and passion. He's the best pitcher we've had since Greg Maddux. Remember what we did with him? And what he did when he left the Cubs? I can't bear to watch another tragedy such as that happen again. I'd seriously consider abandoning my Cub loyalty if we let go of Zambrano. I'll follow him wherever he goes. Alright, perhaps that's a bit extreme. I can't imagine what life would be like without the Cubs.
What do you think, is Zambrano our most prized possession? How much is he worth?

I think getting Zambrano signed to a long term deal should be the #1 priority for Hendry. Zambrano has already stated that if a long term deal isn't worked out, he's gone. After giving so much money to mediocre guys like Ted Lily, Jason Marquis, and Mark DeRosa, Hendry better be willing to give Zambrano a much deserved pay increase. He's easily been their best pitcher the last few seasons and is one of the top young guys in the majors. Zambrano wants about $15 million a year. Hendry gave Soriano way more than that, so I don't see why he can't give Zambrano what he wants.

Yep, I totally agree with everything except your assessment of Lily and Marquis. Mediocre is a kind label. These guys stink, especially Marquis. It's ridiculous the kind of money even bad major leaguers can command these days. I hope I'm wrong, and these guys can win 20-30 games amongst them, but personally, I think our pitching staff is in serious trouble.
