Formerly farmers are small scale business. But today many rich people go into industrial agriculture. They raise chicken by the hundred thousands, they raise hog by the ten of thousands. Ordinary farming has become a lucrative business.

Generally, the big factory farms that raise thousands and thousands of animals are owned by big corporations and not by individuals. They either process and sell as a finished product in the stores or contract with the major meat processors to provide the animals to them. I honestly do not categorize these as farmers - they are mass manufacturers or factories.
The actual "farmers" are very hard working individuals and families who have much sweat, toil and money invested in their operations. They are not backed by big corporations/investors. They care about their land and they care about their animals - which are not locked up in cages or treated inhumanely the way they are in corporate owned factories.
