Madonna says she "wants to be like Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and John Lennon"

From the BBC: "Pop star Madonna has said she 'wants to be like Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and John Lennon.' The 48-year-old made the statement on US radio station Sirius - but added she wanted to 'stay alive'. She also defended a crucifixion scene in last year's Confessions tour. "We all need to be Jesus," she said. The show featured video messages of Aids orphans in Africa. 'Jesus's message was to love your neighbour as yourself and these are people in need,' she added, claiming it had not been her intention to be controversial." Hmmm... I don't know about her chances of being like those three, but I'd say she's the best singer of the group.

To try and compare herself to any of these men is a little far-fetched. My question to Madonna is this. What cause do you feel so passionately for that you would be willing to give your life for it? I doubt there would be any. Lloyd

Maybe the fame has gone to her head... she has lots of people following her around wherever she goes, that's the main similarity I see between her and King, Gandhi, etc. But if she really wants to devote time and money to a worthwhile charitable cause, I'm all for that.

I'm glad she is aspiring to greatness. More of us should try to aspire towards peace in our lives and to do things to reach out and make the world a better place. She may never reach that status, but I don't mind that she wants to do great, selfless things.

She's certainly got a lot of money to do a lot of good with. It'll be interesting to see what she does. She's got a long way to go before she has the impact of a Bono or a Bob Geldof.

At least she found her way in life. She is always looking for new pointoif view and she is very spiritual person. She is much better than many singers and actors.

Seems like she's always looking to find her way. She's had a long career and done many styles of music, and remained popular throughout it all.

I don't know if she's done much yet, so she's got a long way to go. And she's already 48, so she's getting a late start.

She's 48 years old??? She looks damn good for middle-aged woman. Speaking of middle-aged, it sounds to me like she's just going through a mid-life crisis. After portraying herself as a diva and loosey goosey in the 80s, it's no wonder she wants to change her image, especially since her kids are growing up. It also seems like the women in the spotlight (Angelina Jolie as another example) have been adopting babies in Africa all of a sudden. None of those three idols of hers have ever done that.

I don't think JFK ever danced onstage with cones over his chest! I don't know if it's a mid-life crisis; she's be reinventing herself every few years. No, the other three never adopted children, but their impact was far more significant than just adopting a child. Madonna's mother in law expressed skepticism about Madonna adopting the African child, as if she was doing it to keep up with Jolie.

I agree... she's going to be 50 in less than two years. Those other figures accomplished their success before they were 40.

She always finds ways to reinvent herself, so who knows what she plans. I think she is starting to go back to her roots, because her family was also a very religious family, somethings are just ingrained. Perhaps, she feels a sense of atonement, like she has to atone for all that she had done, before it is too late. I don't know. But, her life history will just become more and more interesting with whatever she plans to do next. I once heard on the news, that "art" classes, in I believe Denmark, or another European country in the area, offer a course in art (like music), just on Madonna, how she always reinvents herself, so that she has remained famous even till this day. She was famous when I was a baby, and, now if I were to have one, she would be famous then also. And, listened to, in demand, etc...she is good at that.

If she wants to be like those other figures, she's got a long way to go, and at 48, she's getting a late start. I've heard of college courses on Madonna, but there are also courses on Elvis, the Ramones, etc. If she says she wants to be like those other figures, I hope it's because she really wants to help, not just to compete with Angelina Jolie or to keep her name in the public eye.

I must say that I wish I had Madonna's name. She got a published children's book in the blink of an eye. My friend (23 year old) buys her children's books just because Madonna was the author. Back to the topic: I had a thought when re-reading the title. What do they all have in common? They were all assassinated. Does Madonna really think she's such a huge political figure that someone is so enraged enough to shoot her? I don't know about her principles in government but I do know that I haven't heard anything about gaining independence from a mother country, liberation from a suppressed society or a revolution.
