Haven't we come to a point where cash no longer serves the purpose that it used to? With electronic banking, credit and debit cards, have we come to a point where we no longer need to carry around cash?

I carry very little cash around these days. Since I (finally!) paid off my credit card bills, I don't use them, just a debit card for my checking account. I didn't realize how much I've come to rely on it until I misplaced it a few weeks ago, and it drove me crazy!

You know what? In my personal opinion I would rather have the access to cash as opposed to using that debit machine. I find cash more useful because what happens if the computers go down at your bank?

You will have no access to the money in your account and for all you know you'll never be able to depending on how bad the crash was at the bank. One can only hope that they would be able to find the money we lost otherwise we would become completely left out in the cold. At least with cash too you can more easily monitor how much money you have in general on you.

I think that there are some setbacks to not having printed money on you at any given time. If you were to go completely on the idea that there is no way to check your balance then they would need to come up with some way of always having your budget up to date. You would always have to make sure there was money allocated to the correct envelopes for savings or even groceries. Otherwise trying to just use a debit card with no way of seeing how much you save on it is a complete joke.

I think cash is still necessary in certain places that do not yet take debit and might never implement it because of the cost for certain stores to indeed install the debit machines might be too high. It is these establishments that will sooner or later have to catch up with the rest of the marketplace and spend the necessary money in order to go update their ways of putting alternate forms of payment in their stores.

This would help the merchants out in that they would finally take advantage of certain methods of payment that were not accessible earlier due to them not being able to afford to have them. It would also make it easier for the customers because the would only have to use their cards to pay for something.

In conclusion, I don't believe it's a total revolution to eliminate cash completely. I believe that there will always be a need for printed money but in terms of how much or how popular it is that has yet to be seen. I don't think it will be to the same degree it is these days. I think you will have a day in the future in time where we will not be dependant on paper money, but that will be outside of our lifetimes.
