Mamas, did you have sonogram/doptone use during your pregnancy? |
| |
| I went to birthclass last night and was shown a very scary video on ultrasound and how it affects normal cells. The video was of doctors and technicians who say that ultrasound is so new they don't know the long term effects, but it can cause cell mutations (like cancer) and that in labratory animals, the effects of ultrasound on cells can be seen as far down the genetic line as 10 generations. So, what that means is, if you expose a female fetus to ultrasound, you are also exposing all of her eggs to ultrasound, so her children will be affected, and their children and so on. This completely wigged me out, because I had a sonogram at 18 weeks, and my midwife regularly uses the doptone with emits a higher frequency than a sonogram. What are your opinions on ultrasound, and did you use it when pregnant? | | | | | |

| | Many years ago (27-30), when I was pregnant, they didn't do them. They are a great tool to find out problems right away, but like so many new technologies, the long term-effects may not show up til far in the future. | | | | | | |

| | It is used as standard practice in the UK and I had it twice with each pregnancy. At the time there was a few people saying it wasn't safe, but I didn't really think about it. Now I wish I had. | | | | | | |

| | Me too, Michelle. Every couple at my class last night was angry after seeing the video. When you see a doctor say 'I don't tell my patients about the risks because it would cause them to panic'... argh. This is exactly why I don't blindly put faith in doctors and pharmaseutical companies... because they lie. | | | |

| | I had lots of ultrasounds throughout both of my pregnancies because of a few complications. I think they are great tools to find out the health of your baby and Id much rather know ahead of time if something is going to be wrong with my baby instead of not finding out until he's born! | | | | | | |

| | The same with me. When I was pregnant with my daughter,I had so many ultrasounds done. My husband was with me for every one, that he can now read an ultrasound like a tech. With my third one, I have had 3 so far,I am going for a level 2 next month. I think if ultrasounds were that harmful the FDA would not have approved them. | | | |

| | The thing is, ultrasounds are NEW. They've only been used for around 30 years. 50 years ago, docs didn't think there was anything wrong with giving a pregnant woman an ex-ray. Now, they know better. the fact is, they need more time to determine long-term effects of ultrasound, so NO ONE can say they are 'safe', because they don't know if they are or not. But they keep doing them routinely, because ultrasounds are a huge money-maker. I just don't like the idea of anybody using MY body as a guinea pig. OR my babies. | | | |

| | CRiley, I just found an article entitled 'FDA: Ultrasound a tool, not a toy' in which "FDA officials say that ultrasound can generate heat in fetal tissue, create microscopic bubbles and cause vibrations, all of which might affect fetal development". The article also states that the FDA is threatening doctors with fines, confiscation of ultrasound equiptment and possible shutdown if they don't stop 'exposing fetuses to unnecessary risk' ... meaning performing 'routine' ultrasounds for no medical, diagnostic purpose. I'm not disputing the validity of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool, I'm just saying I had no idea the FDA and everyone else apparantly knows there are risks and we women are having sonagrams and being told otherwise. 'it's completely safe' is a fallacy, as I am quickly learning. | | | |

| | i am just scared to death to come to know this... i had aroun 20 ultra sounds while pregnancy as my baby has some growing issues and she didnt get fed thorugh placenta...so doctor monitors her growth through high power ultrasound... and nurses also come daily at my home to put doplers on my tummy to conclude baby's movement... after knowing the facts you posted here... i am just speechless...... stunned..!!! | | | | | | |

| | I was too... and I was angry at myself for not researching it beforehand. I mean, it's MY job to protect my baby. I was a little angry at my midwife, too, because I had no idea how powerful the doppler was and I feel uninformed about my care. My birth class instructor said that the reason the baby always moves away from the doppler is because it hurts them! I do think they can be good tools for diagnosis, but the reality is not much can be done in most cases even if they do find something wrong. My MW uses the doppler just to hear the heartbeat once a week. I'm going to refuse it after seeing this video. | | | |

| | This is news to me! Just about everyone gets at least one ultrasound done in the united states. Its pretty regular to get one at five months pregnant. They use sound waves to view the picture of the baby if i am correct and I dont see how this is harmful. I think it is scary and traumatic for them to show that in a birthing class. Now I'm worried about my daughter being exposed lol. My mother had one when she was pregnant with me and I turned out fine, and had a normal baby girl...so maybe this is just a scare or something that rarely happens. I dont think ultrasounds are necessary though. | | | | | | |

| | I think that perhaps this is just something that very rarely happens. I do think that ultrasounds are VERY necessary though. Especially if you've had complicated pregnancies before. They're a necessary way to determine if the baby is head down or if it will be a breach birth, not to mention a way to monitor the developement of the baby, or in some cases, multiple babies. I had several when I was pregnant (and several after to check the position of my IUD) and my son turned out just fine. | | | |

| | The thing the video said is that the damage that is done is on a very small level, so of course everyone who has one has healthy babies. But actually seeing normal cell activity before sonogram, and then after sonogram was the scary part. After cells are exposed to sonogram, they look scrambled and are disorganized... the ultrasound waves clearly cause cellular abnormalities and CAN cause cell mutations, as in cancer. I don't think it's a scare, as it was released to let parents know that there are indeed risks, and that the medical community doesn't know exactly what long-term affects are. But they know it changes normal cell activity, and that the changes can be seen in generations to come. I'm just upset that everyone tells you how safe it is, when that's not a fact... and women are getting way too many ultrasounds for non-medical reasons. I for one haven't had any complications or problems at all, and I've been exposing my baby to ultrasound for months! I don't claim to know everything about this, but I plan on doing my research... | | | |

| | My girls are 13 and 16 and I had one with my first pregnancy because I was spotting... but that was at 8 weeks. I didn't have any other sonograms... my doctor would only do them if he felt they were medically necessary. I have no idea if they will harm you or not... I sure hope not cause there are a lot of women who get quite a few of them with each pregnancy! | | | | | | |

| | I believe that different countries use different equipment, methods and standards in regards to ultrasounds. I've heard that ultrasounds can affect the baby but if it was true - i'm sure you'd get a stack of information about it and you'd have to sign forms to make sure you don't sue them later!! I had 3 ultrasounds with both of my boys - with the last one being at 5 months. I know countries in Europe do some later but they don't here in Australia unless there is some kind of emergency. Doptones [or doppler scan] are used all the time - i believe that it is urban legend about it being on a higher frequency. I believe there are doptones that are on a higher frequency but they are used for other things. According to the book i received when first pregnant from my doctor there are no reported problems or risks associated with the use of using after 12 weeks. | | | | | | |

| | This is from WebMD, found on CNN Interactive: London-- 'Ultrasound scans, routinely used to look at internal organs and to moniter the growth of a developing fetus, can stop cells from dividing normally, Irish scientists said Wednesday' .... 'during the study, the rate of cell division in mice that were given an 8 megahertz scan lasting 15 minutes was 22 percent lower than normal, and the rate of cell death doubled. Routine hospital scans use frequencies between 3 and 10 megahertz and can last up to 60 minutes. Dr. Brennan said the sound waves of the scans could be damaging the DNA in cells, which could delay cell division and repair, or it might be switching on p53, a tumor suppressor gene that controls cell death. Cancer occurs when damaged cells multiply uncontrollably and form tumors. Mutations in p53 are the commonest gene abnormalities seen in human cancers.' | | | |

| | I had one with my first daughter at 8 weeks. This was because I kept bleeding and they wanted to make sure that the baby was alright. I did have one with my last daughter, which was at like 22 or 23 weeks. This was just to see what sex I was having. Both of them turned out fine as well. However, now this is only my opinion, but I believe that they are going over-the-top with this thing. I don't believe everything that they say because this will probably change in the future, as all things do with more research. I would have to say that there is nothing wrong with being skeptical about this, but I wouldn't freak out about it, as this is what some doctors and scientists want to happen. There are risks to everything that you do, including getting a sonogram. I wouldn't really worry about it unless something happens to your baby. But who is to say that this could be from getting a sonogram? You really don't know and probably won't know. So, if I were you, I would just take a breather and look at the positives of this as well. Just my two cents. | | | | | | |

| | I would ask you to read my above recent post on what the FDA says about non-medical sonograms. Having a sonogram 'just to determine the sex of the baby' could get your doctor shut down. I appreciate your opinion, however, the more research I've done today, the more I realized I knew NOTHING about this. And I think most women are sorely undereducated about what exactly they're exposing their babies to. I'm over my freak-out, as there is nothing I can do about the past, but I surely won't expose any future children to ultrasound waves. | | | |

| | I had two done. The first one was early in pregnancy, only for a few minutes to measure him-they had no clue how far along I was. Due to my own health problems, I had a high risk pregnancy and they wanted to be sure to know these things. I had a second one done at 20 weeks, we have a history of birth defects in my family and I really wanted to be prepared to know if anything was going to happen. Especially since I was delivering in a hospital that didn't have a neonatal intensive care unit, if there was a problem, they were going to send me a couple hours away when I got further along in my pregnancy. It was scary but I have a healthy happy son now. I do however think that some ob's use sonograms too much. My sister got them every 4 weeks, once that it was established that there were no health problems-they did it just for pictures. I think that is ridiculous, now wonder why health insurance is so expensive if they cover trivial stuff like this. I also believe there are a lot of environmental factors now in days that cause more cancer, the air we breather, our soil, our food, and the immunizations have lots of toxins and some heavy metals in some things. That's not good for our bodies at all. | | | | | | |

| | With my 1st baby I just had the routine Ultrasounds, I think 3 total, plus the heart doppler at every Dr visit. For my Son I needed more Ultrasounds, due to what they thought was cpmplications, I think I needed like 7 total? Plus the heart monitoring at every Dr visit, both kids are healthy. | | | | | | |
