Is a quarter of a carat of diamonds good? What is the smallest carat of diamonds?I've chosen a ring that I like. It's 18 ct white gold with .25 ct diamonds. I don't know much about jewellery but would like to know if this is a good quality ring?

There is more to a diamond than just carat. That's really a weight measurement - it will denote the size. A quarter carat diamond isn't really big enough to be completely scrutinized. IF you like it, that's all that matters. The other important aspects of a diamond are cut, color and clarity. Cut is the shape. Is it round, square, marquis, pear shaped, etc. Color is the tone - some diamonds can even be yellow. Clarity is more a mark of the flawlessness of a diamond. Only a jeweler, under a sight glass or microscope can identify color and clarity. So the carat is only a piece of defining the quality of a diamond. Ask for a certificate of authenticity with the diamond and they may include the 4 Cs. But for .25 carat, they might not do the full analysis. AS for the gold - the higher the carat of gold, the more PURE the gold. However, the more pure the gold, the SOFTER the gold. SO 24 carat gold might be a purer gold (i.e. less alloying elements) but it will also be softer and more prone to damage. 10-14 carat gold is much more durable for constant wear. 24 carat gold is very soft, and will scratch and bend easily. So 18 carat will be more durable than 24 and is more appropriate for a ring.

Wow-great info Cassidy! Yeah I fell in love with the ring as soon as I saw it. If colour and clarity can only be seen under a microscope then I don't care what it is! I was thinking about people who are very into jewellery and thought 'having a huge rock on your finger doesn't make you a better person. All you did was fork over some cash and shove it on your finger'. Oh, did I mention this is my engagement ring? I'm thinking these will be my first and last diamonds!

definitely, you should be thankful about your diamond. Regardless of the carat and the weight. still, it is a diamond. Many people are dreaming to have 0ne, so you should be blessed and thankful for what you have. Just treasure it. anyway, diamond is still a diamond.

yeah me either but it is 1/4 of a dimond.. it all matters on how much carbon is in the diamond... If it is a dirty diamond it is crap... who cares through... you like it right??? that's all that matters
