Yes, it's a lucrative industry. Here in Malaysia, we used to have Malaysian Idol. But only for two seasons. I am not sure why they stopped the program. It's been a good one though. Anyway, now i watch American Idol. The new season is quite competitive. Many people wanted to join American Idol because they will most likely become a celebrity even if they do not win the Idol title. At least they get to be popular.

The contestant gets international audience. Some contestants have good voice quality. Today if you have a TV program concept that can attract big crowd, texting to vote for the winner alone makes lots of money.

yes it was great that we have our own idol but the thing is due to the network wars that we have, 1st Philippine idol mau marcelo doesn't seem to be getting any coverage at all. channel 5, the one who got the idol franchise, unfortunately does not have shows that would promote mau and if i remember right part of the winnings is a sole-contract with channel 5. so much for life after idol.
i'd say the runners-up were luckier, or at least one of them, the magdangal guy who happens to be the cousin of channel 7's singer-actress-host jolina magdangal. he is now a mainstay in SOP, a popular sunday noon-time show.
