Are sports players getting too greedy?

When I was growing up,sports players played for the love of the game now it's all about the money. I don't think any sports players are worth 50-100 million dollars. That is just out right ridiculous.they ask for so much money and the fans are the ones that have to suffer for it

I won't disagree with you, athletes are making waaaay too much money; however, if owners can afford to pay them, then that means the team in which they play for is making the money. If the money doesn't go directly to the players, it goes into the owners' pockets. The fans don't exactly suffer much of anything. Oh sure, they may have to pay rising ticket prices, but the rise in price is never significant enough to warrant a refusal to watch. I'm a huge Cubs fan, and we (er, the Cubs, rather) granted Alfonso Soriano a deal for $146 million over 7 years. Ticket prices went up $2 this year. Granted, I'm not happy, but I'm ecstatic to see a monetary investment of this nature into my team. I mean hey, afterall it's only been like 100 years since we won a title. I'd pay an extra $10/ticket if it means we get to the World Series. As long as fans continue to pay, athletes will continue to earn, and earn handsomely. F.Y.I. NBA Allstar tickets were selling for $27,000 per ticket...and people were buying them.

There has been a decline in ticket sales,I saw that on the news and i have seen many fans interviewed on tv complaining about the ticket prices.(of course the concession prices too).I do not frequent the ballparks bcause I am not gonna pay such high prices especially when I can watch it at home and get a better view.I would rather hand out money to see a minor league teamplay as it is so much cheaper.

You brought up a very good point. No the level is'nt the same as big parks are but on the other hand,it's more intimate as the minor parks are smaller.I think both minor and major ballparks have their merits. The one thing both have is that all too familiar smell of popcorn and hot dogs. I have such wonderful memories of going to the parks and am so looking forward to watching my Phillies play the Minnesota twins March 18th!(curtesy of my brother)

At first, those who go into sports, are into it for the love of it. However, those who have acquired and displayed excellent skills after sometime, are offerred huge sums of money just so they will enlist the services of the guy in their team. The idea of having the opportunity to earn while playing is very appealing, and so they get the guy to play in their team. Then the recruiters will tell them that a raise will be given if they hit the targetted goal, a bonus if the team shall be the champions for the season, and so on and so forth to earn so much more. This breeds greed among the players. They are starting to get the idea that their services are so desired and needed they could peg their contract prices higher and then higher again...It is not good news to hear of it but, it is happening.

I won't disagree with you!the bonuses certainly do help the greed grow. they hand out all this money to the players and alot of times they play well for the first year or two then they start going down hill. It's like once they have the money it doesn't matter how they play as long as they get the paycheck

Sports players are way too greedy as many of them only care about the money they make and nothing else. I believe that many of them do not care about the fans as much as they may seem. I still remember T.O. crying on a late night talk show about his $7 million a year salary not being enough to feed his family. It is sad that athletes have changed so much over the years and wish it could be the way it was in the 70's and 80's. The more they make, the more money it costs us to go to the games.

As I stated before, yes, these guys are making too much money. But, don't act as if they don't work hard to deserve it. They work far more than 3-4 hours/day. They work all day, every day, in season, and off-season. Remember, these guys are the elite. The best of the best, and sports is about competition. There's always some young up and comer that is looking to unseat a player from his starting position. Therefore, they work their tails off to be sure this doesn't happen, so they can continue to collect these ludicrous pay checks. I'm just saying don't short change the amount of effort an athlete puts into his respective sport. T.O. = quite possibly the biggest whiner and most selfish athlete to ever put on a uniform. He's a bad example. There's plenty of players out there that are hush hush kinds of guys that get paid what they deserve and that's it, that's the end of it. Look at the St. Louis Cardinals players. Albert Pujols is the best hitter in the game today. Jim Edmonds is one of the best center fielders. Scott Rolen is one of the best third baseman. All of these guys (in comparison to other athletes in baseball) could be earning so much more, but they choose to keep their salaries reasonable, so that their team can sign one more star, and increase the likelihood that they win a ring. What I'm saying is, there's a good deal of players out there that allow the concept of team and winning, to supercede the concept of 'I deserve more money.'

YOu don't have to tell me about TO! Being an Eagles fan,I wanted to strangle him everytime he came on the field.I have never seen such a whiney baby in my life.I was so glad when he left the Eagles!YOu know it's bad when a player's own teammates, don't like him! I know for sure Bill Purcells didn't like TO going to Dallas, but I had also heard the other Dallas players didn't like him much either. I don't know what makes players like. They came a little bit of fame and fortune and it goes to their heads!

So true! they are never satisfied with what they get.In the 70 So true! In the 70's and 80's ,we didn't have to worry about this.Players played because they loved the game now it 's getting ridiculous.I remember TO bellyaching about the 7 million! If 7 million isn't enough to live on,that's too bad.It just never ceases to amaze me they get paid that much money for 3-4 hours play and practice during the week! I think the fans ought to go on strike for a change!

they are overpaid. that is for sure. but then when I watch football and see how rough of a sport it is I know why they are paid so well. if I was hit one time the way they are hit I would be in a coma. lol.

Just a quick follow up to this discussion from yesterday, when I got home last night and turned on the news there was once again our Titans biggest embarrassment making headlines, seems he was in Las Vegas and was making money rain when one of the dancers started to pick up some of the money he was throwing out, he pulled the girls hair and proceeded to beat her. When a bouncer tried to stop him Pacman was heard to say he was going to kill him, before it was over that night the bouncer lay in the hospital with his spine severed and two other people shot. Once again one of our finest athletes, gives such a role modeling performance.

He's actually been in trouble quite a bit throughout his career, and because of this last incident, he may in fact be done, in the NFL anyways. He certainly deserves to be. My condolescences go out to you because you're a Titans fan, but look at the bright side, they do have Vince Young. He's going to beeee good!

I feel bad for angelwhispers, too.I know it's not easy rooting for a team that has a lot of players like that.I'm an Eagles fan and I am so grateful that we haven't had problems like that-well yet anyway!
