Removing wallpaper

How hard is it to remove wallpaper from walls? We are wanting to do some remodeling and thought we might that ourselves instead of paying for it. But several people I have talked to said that it is very messy and hard to do. I want to hear from people who have done it themselves about whether they would do it again or pay to have it done.
