Why do people drive around with their dog on their lap?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 98/100. beaniefanatic13 (2154)   ranked 50 out of 765 in pets 5 years ago

Over the past 2 days I have been in nearly 2 accidents from people with their dogs. The first was a man driving his mini van, he had what appeared to be a boxer/pitbull mix on his lap. The dog would hang out the window for a minute then come back in and obstruct the drivers view bumping him causing the driver to swerve into other lanes. The second was a women with her chihuahua on her lap. While she was driving and paying more attention to her dog than the road she failed to see the person in front of her slowing down to make a turn, causing her to slam on her brakes and veer into the other lane.
I understand that people's pets are a part of the family and you want to bring them with you, but do they have to ride on your lap? My kids are a part of my family however they don't crawl all over me while I'm trying to drive. I find this to be a hazard to other drivers as much as cell phones are. I think that if you want to bring your pet that's great but I think that he should ride someplace other than your lap.
This is my 2 cents worth. Just looking to see what others have to say? Has anyone else had any close calls?

I think it all boils down to one reason. Because they can. Its like people who drive and use cell phones. Everyone thinks "Oh that will never happen to me, it only happens to other people. They just don't understand that when you do unsafe things you can and probably will be in an accident some day.

I so wish that people would stop and think about the actions they take while on the road. When my children miss behave in the car, I pull over to the side of the road or into a parking lot to take care of it. I think that all people should have respect for one another while driving. Just my 2 cents worth. :)

i love animals, but i do not treat them like they are children, its getting ridiculous how people act with their animals. its great to have a pet, but for petes sake, i have seen all these celebrities that dress them, and carry them around in their purses-how stupid...

Ok so i drive with my small chihuahua and she is very scared in the car when we get on the hwy and she gets on my lap turns forward and backs her but up and down beside me and the car door. So only her head and front feet are on my left leg. If that makes sense!

She is out of my way and forget she is there all the time! If i try and put her in the back or in the pass seat she cries and tries to fight me to get in that spot!

I bring her to work with me bc I work long hours in the city and it would be mean for me to leave alone at home all that time!

but i do not love on her and play with her while i am driving and no one out of my car can even see her.

now everytime we stop she thinks its time to get out and sits up and looks out the window and then we move and she gets back in her spot!

I have found that my dog doesnt distract me however she distracts other drivers! Like at lights and stuff when she pops up they other drivers are all looking at her and they dont pay attetion to what they are doing!!!

So I think if a person is going to be distracted they are going to be distracted no matter if they have a dog in the car or not!!!

And maybe actual driving test should be issued everynow and then in place of written!!!

What I don't understand is for all the people who say they love their pet, why so you endenager it's life? Animals when in cars should be restrained for safety the same as anyone else in your car. Do you buckle up?

I also wonder why some people do some crazy things like apying make up, their pet in their lap etc.

I really apriciate who love their pet or any other animal. But that does not mean to get risk to you life by taking them in your lap while driving and it may be a threat to others life too. We love our children, but we don't take them in our lap while driving. There should be a law like how you can take your pet in your car, like you take your children in a car under rule.

myLot reputation of 98/100. beaniefanatic13 (2154)   ranked 50 out of 765 in pets  5 years ago

I agree the makeup thing and shaving are also irresponsible actions that can cause accidents. I understand everyone is in a hurry nowadays, but common sense and safety people, do we really need the government to make a law? Your right we follow the laws for our children, at least most do, they ride in car seats or at least buckled in to a seat belt not on our laps. :)

Seems like you are pretty upset about that and I can understand why. I have also been in similar situations myself. I think that more people will realize the danger once they have a really bad accident. Just be happy that you were not in a wreck and count your blessings. You Know?

myLot reputation of 98/100. beaniefanatic13 (2154)   ranked 50 out of 765 in pets  5 years ago

I'm always upset when I see people doing irresponsible things while driving and endngering others. A car can be a dangerous "weapon", for lack of a better word, and people just don't realize how dangerous everyday things can be. :) I'm very happy that neither incident resulted in an accident. It was just because I had noticed the animals on their laps and paid closer attention to them while traveling down the road near them. :)

naa....thankfully no such incidents with turbulent pet lovers...!!
but i too have seen soo many people riding with their dogs on their laps or in the front seat!!
these people dont realize that they are not only endangering their own lifez but also the lifes of others!!
i dont know if they feel it this way or not....but i definately feel that my life is worth more than their lovely dogs or cats!!!

myLot reputation of 98/100. beaniefanatic13 (2154)   ranked 50 out of 765 in pets  5 years ago

Everyones life is worth more, and people should be paying attetion to their driving and not their pet, or their kids, or applying makeup or shaving. Driving is a priveledge not a right! Just my 2 cents worth. :)

no i have never come across this..only seen it on american movies lol..so this is what happened to you so recently?
i think it is down right irresponsible for drivers to be preoccupied by their pets when their mind has to be on the road..they can endanger others aswell as themselves and their passengers..

myLot reputation of 98/100. beaniefanatic13 (2154)   ranked 50 out of 765 in pets  5 years ago

LOL, American moveies, that's why they do it. I just wonder do they realize how dangerous it is? I just had to vent!! :)

That is very dangerous. I'm a cyclist and it's idiots like that who get people like me killed. I hope that anyone seen driving like that is pulled over by the police and charged with not being in proper control of the car.

myLot reputation of 98/100. beaniefanatic13 (2154)   ranked 50 out of 765 in pets  5 years ago

Yes, for cyclist it is even more of a danger I atleast have a vehicle surrounding me for some protection from injury from people not paying attention, you/they don't. I also hope that these people are pulled over and sited. :)

My friends father used to drive with his french poodle laying across his shoulders.

I think the dogs are more dangerous then cell phones.

People think they love their dogs and this is how they show it, if we truly loved out dogs, they would be restrained in our vehicle the same way our children are.

My dogs ride in the back seat. They lay down or look out the window, once in a while, a nose will appear on the console, for a quick pet. (And I know that this is not safe for them or me - in case of a crash - I have 90 pound projectiles in my car. But they will not be the cause of the accident.

Usually you can not blame the dogs for their behavior in the car, but the owners.

myLot reputation of 98/100. beaniefanatic13 (2154)   ranked 50 out of 765 in pets  5 years ago

I agree that it's not the animals fault but the owner. I also think that restrining an animal is the safest bet when in a car, if for some reason you had to slam on the brakes or you were rear ended your poor animal could be thrown through a windshield. How terrible would peole feel if this happened? Would they take the balme or blame the other person for rear ending them? I feel both are to blame. Just my 2 cents worth. :)

Luckily I've never had a close call due to someone driving with their dog on their lap, nor do I drive around with my own dog on my lap. You're right, animals are family and that should be a reason in itself not to drive around with them on your lap, it could be a danger to traffic, yourself and your dog. Is there any kind of "charge" out there to stop people from doing this? If there isn't, maybe it should be considered as I consider this to be even more dangerous than talking on your cellphone and driving.

myLot reputation of 98/100. beaniefanatic13 (2154)   ranked 50 out of 765 in pets  5 years ago

I really don't know if there is a law or not, but I think I'm going to find out. These 2 incidents were my first close encounters. I have seen for years people not paying attention because of their pet but never have I almost been hit and for it to happen twice just got me to thinking how dangerous is this? What do others think? I actually debated on whether to do this discussion because of people getting angry, but thought I want to know if it's just me. :)

Winky390 (5)   ranked 532 out of 765 in pets  5 years ago

Laws on this topic probably vary from city to city...In many areas though, there are no laws regarding this unsafe act. I have personally seen three different accidents which were caused by tiny lap dogs who had distracted their owners while driving causing them to crash. I think, like previously stated, with the "NO CELLULAR PHONE" while driving, why not make a law that states, any other action that causes a distraction while driving is illegal.

myLot reputation of 98/100. beaniefanatic13 (2154)   ranked 50 out of 765 in pets  5 years ago

I think that you are correct, the law shouldn't be aimed at one distraction it should include other distractions that you could be cited for.

My lab will jump in my lap because he's afraid of car travel. I think he gets motion sick. I generally let him stay there, because I think to push him away would be to take my mind off the task at hand which is driving.

I do think that people who spend their driving time petting and coddling their pet need to realize that if they were in an accident, the pet that they love so dearly could end up tragically injured. There are dog harnesses, that work the same as seatbelts in the car. I also find that most pet lap drivers take great pains to crate their dogs at home. They should consider crates for the car as well.

myLot reputation of 98/100. beaniefanatic13 (2154)   ranked 50 out of 765 in pets  5 years ago

I agree completely, it's extremely dangerous and puts the animal at great risk for injury or even worse. :)
