Apple butter recipes  | |  I would like a really good recipe for apple butter. As I remember what my Mother made it had Nutmeg and/or Cloves along with Cinnamon. Anyone got a recipe like that?

| | | | | | | 1. Christmas2006 (36) | 4 years ago | This recipe comes from Better Homes and Garden Canning Cookbook. I have made it before and so has my daughter. She even made a special batch leaving out the sugar for diabetics and gave it as a Christmas present.
Hope it is the recipe that you are looking for. You could adjust the spices to suit your taste. I don't have a food mill so I pealed my apples then cooked them and mashed them with a masher in the pot then continued with the cooking instructions.
Apple Butter
6 pounds tart apples 6 cups cider or apple juice. Core and quarter unpeeled apples. In 4 to 6 quart kettle or Dutch oven combine apples and cider. Cook till soft, about 30 minutes. Press through food mill. Boil gently 30 minutes; stir occasionally. Add 3 cups sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves. Cook and stir over low heat till sugar dissolves. Boil gently, stirring frequently, till of desired thickness. Carefully ladle the hot butter into hot jars, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Adjust lids. Process in boiling water bath (half-pints) 10 minutes. Makes 8 half-pints. | |
