I have a resume up on at least 10 different online sites, I have had this up since I was 17, I'm now 24 and have had no luck with any of them, I have updated and changed information but still no luck. I was just getting frustrated a minute ago and decided to post about it. So do you use online sites to find a job and if you have has it worked well for you. I'm just curious.

I tried this when I graduated from college--along with sending out resumes and portfolios. I found that nothing worked better than face-to-face interaction. I then finally got a job and became the gate-keeper for prospective employees. Not to be negative, but I rarely gave priority to people who just sent me emails, and I never checked online sites--they're too impersonal. Even something as simple as a hand-written note along with a professional resume would get the person past me and into the boss's inbox. It sucks to really have to put yourself out there, but until you do, you're a faceless, digital bunch of words competing with actual people--who have connections and (even if they don't have connections) make a statement about who they are that can say so much more than a digital resume--such as their level of professional dress, their demeanor, and their personality. Cold calling sucks, but it's what got me my first job. I'd sent out over 50 resumes with no response, so I hopped on a plane to the city I wanted to go and cold called people until I got one offer for an interview. It was horrible, and I went home so discouraged. Then 3 months later (an eternity!!), I got a call back from one of the companies I'd cold called on that trip. Apparently, they didn't have any work when I called, but they remembered my initiative and called me for a job as soon as they landed a major client. Get out there. It may take awhile, but you'll definitely find something. I don't know you, but you seem like a very articulate and dedicated person. Good luck!

I'm from Texas originally. It's a fun place. Where are you thinking of moving? I worked in Dallas. There's an incredible design community there--both commercially and residentially. I did my internship in Dallas before I graduated. I'd strongly encourage you to network with both IIDA and ASID. Both have very active chapters there. As friendly as Texans are, if you go to some of their monthy events, you'll have no problem making some great connections.

I thought of something else. While you're in school, it's a great idea to be a student member of either (or both of those organizations). I know they have discount memberships for students, so it's not as horrible as the professional rate. I'd encourage you to enter any of the charrette or other competitions they host. That's actually how I found out about the firm I interned with in Dallas. My charrette team didn't win the state competition (hosted by IIDA), but we went to a bunch of honoree parties at some Dallas firms and got linked up with some mentors from several firms who took us out on the town. That was the best way to get contacts b/c you bond from going out and drinking--rather than just sitting in some stuffy lecture hall!

i have my resume up at a couple different sites. Monster.com, Careerboard.com. I think its still up on the local newpaper sites too. But like you said i never got any leads from it other then scam jobs or jobs where they want you to be a telemarketer. Those really make me mad because they never really look at your resume. I have more luck with the local newspapers.

I think that those sites only work if you fit exactly into the busness mold. I think it's great for people who have years of experance with fourtune 500 type compaines but not so good for people starting out.
