my son is 3years old and knows the whole alphabet we have been teaching him for just over 3 weeks singing it with him and treating it as like a game never pushing it to far though. whenever we want to teach him something we always make it into a game otherwise he would get bored and start to play up.

Around age two we started singing the alphabet to our daughter. She got most of it, but would forget letters here and there. This year for Christmas a friend bought her the Leap Frog Fridge Phonics + Numbers. It's magnetic and not only does it have a button that plays the alphabet song, it also has a place to put the letters in it. Then it tells what the letter is and gives the sounds that it makes. You can also put the magnetic numbers in it and it will count to that number. I would recommend it to you, I think our friend bought it at Walmart.

You can start teachign your children the alphabet whenever you want. It's easiest to sing the song to them when they are little, and they will become more familiar with it. My two year old has been recently linking the song to the letters he sees. We write the letters up on the wall in his bathroom, with soap crayons, and we have the foam bath letters, he matches the bath letters to the crayon letters and places the foam in the correct tile, he loves it. WHenever you are teaching your children, make sure it is fun for them, when they become frustrated and bored, it is your signal that they are done for now, and pick it up later . Good luck.

You can start teaching them as early as 1 or 2 with songong songs and reading books. The more you read and sing to them the more they will retain and learn. When they get to be 2 or 3 they will be able to start reciting the alphabet with you. But make sure that you are teaching them their numbers as well.

The easiest way to teach a child the alphabet is by singing it to them repeatedly. HAving Barney tapes help tremendously.
As for the correct age to teach kids, I say it's when they're good and ready. My son is 28 months old now and he is like a sponge, he easily absorbs everything I teach him. He can now count 1-10 in both English and Spanish. I am working on the alphabet next. HE can say most letters and it is so much fun to hear him recite it back to you.

I say as soon as they start talking sing the alphabet to them all the time. My child was 2 when she learned the alphabet. She is 3 now and she knows her alphabet, how to write her name, how to count to 15 in english and spanish, all her colors and working on shapes right now. Just start early and they will soon pick up. I also showed her books of the alphabet all the time.
