Brrrrr

fireplace - a crackling log in the fireplace adds a lot of ambiance, but what about heat?

It is so cold today. Or, at least I am! what do you use to heat your home? do you have central heating? We do not have central heating, we have an inefficient fireplace. We also have those baseboard electric heaters but do not use them (mostly because we have other things against the walls, but also they tend to raise the utilities cost by way too much) We also use kerosene space heaters, they work really well - but to conserve fuel we generally turn one on in the evening and then off again at bedtime. Although, the fire in the fireplace is lovely to listen to and watch, it really does not help to warm us up at all, not unless we are sitting on the hearth!

I also have electric heating, but it's too expensive to use. I turn it just high enough to keep the pipes from freezing, and the rest of the time I just wear my coat and hat when I'm at home.

brrr, we keep the coats on too, and fluffy socks, sometimes mittens. Supposed to warm up tomorrow. That will be nice.

We have an electric heat pump to heat our home. In the summer, it also works as a central air conditioner. Unfortunatly, our house is not well insulated, so it has to run quite a bit to keep up when it is very hot or cold outside. We wish we had a stove or fireplace for extra warmth in the winter, but it would be too expensive to add one, considering we may not stay here many more years. We've learned our lesson for when we look for our next house, though.

hindsight sure is 20/20, isn't it? We do not have a/c so I suppose we save that way, it gets awful hot and humid here in the ozarks.

yea, it is cold here as well. we have a fireplace that is broken. when we bought the house, it was already broken and didnt have time to fix it because of the job my dad has right now. he has been busy. but we do have an air conditioner/heater and we are using (since its cold) the heater to keep us warm and it works pretty well with it. i like to stand in the place where it really comes out more to keep myself even warmer.

I know what you mean about the fumes, it is one of my fears. Our house has a lot of drafts so I am not overly concerned about CO2 poisoning, but, we do not leave it on while we sleep. If the heater runs out of fuel that last bit does have an awful kerosene smell, and burns our eyes, so we do not let it get that low. We also turn it off at bedtime so as to ensure safety. The worst was a horrible smell when one of the kids decided to melt a crayon on it! augh.
