On 2/20 I had to take my son to the ER. He was diagnosed with strep throat. 2 days later we went to his regular physician and she changed the antibiotic because she said whatever he was on wasn't working.

Since then we've gone back to the ER or his doctor 3 times.

He has had the fever since 2/20. If I don't give him tylenol every six hours his fever goes up to 102+.

I would have thought the antibiotics (he's on a pretty heavy dose, 875 mg of Amoxicillin) would have cured ANY infection he had.

WHY does he still have a fever?

Today he started vomiting. It's a new symptom.

He seems 'ok' other than excessive thirst.

I am worried but I don't know what to do.

Any suggestions? I'm so worried.

Strep throat can get pretty serious is not treated properly and can even infect other organs in the body. I would take him back to the doctor or see a different doctor. He should be getting better by now. Hope he gets to feeling better soon.:)

I honestly think that he has a case of the flu. There are many forms of it. You might have to try taking him to a different medical center/hospital. You might need to get another opinion. Being on antibiotics doesn't always do the job. My niece had a bad case of the flu before christmas, and thats what they did for her. It didn't help her at all. She had the flu for almost a month and was almost admitted to the hospital. I think that the antibiotics are getting weaker. They may say that you are getting a stronger dosage, but in the long run, it'ds no stronger than a regular dosage. Now I have no proof to back that up, that is just my opinion.
Honestly, if it was my child, I really would consult with another specialist. It is so easy to become dehydrated with the flu.

Thank you.

I just spoke to my best friend who is a nurse (I should have done that in the first place) and she said Amoxicillin is the weakest antibiotic.

She suggested Bactrim or something.

We're going BACK to the doctor tomorrow and I'll talk to her about it then.

I WISH I could take him somewhere else, but flipping HMOs you know? He has to go to his primary care physician.

I had a massive strep infection some years ago. I took ages to go away, and I was running fevers every time I ate, for months. It moved into the lungs, and I had fluid on the lungs for a while. I wound up on painkillers for the lungs and back. Six months later I was OK, but for years, if I got hot, I wondered if I was running a fever.

Look out for complications. Sorry, but this is from experience. Strongly suggest you see a specialist. That's a huge dose of antibiotics, and doesn't seem to be achieving much. Thirst is probably due to the fevers, and he definitely doesn't need dehydration to add to the symphony. The repeated fevers would mean a persistent infection, and that his immune system is stubborn as a mule.

If he's relatively stable otherwise, that's a good sign. The vomiting is probably getting rid of some nasties, too, but it doesn't sound like much fun, and he does need his food. You might want to try some good fresh green veg to help his digestion, under the circumstances. Green veg and fruit also help supply water, and will assist in replacing electrolytes. The extra water will also help his digestion.

Good luck, sounds like a tough time for all of you.

OMG! Don't scare me MORE, LOL.

Yeah I figured he was a little dehydrated because he's not eating much at all.

I think it's because he has asthma also so he gets bronchitis (thus antibiotics) a lot and it's probably just resistant.

I'm going to the Dr. tomorrow to demand on of the antibiotics that target strep. Thanks to my best friend, I have a list of them.

For me, the alternative way is herbalisme. Morinda citrifolia is the queen of herbs, and ganoderma lucidum (red fungi) is the king of herbs. Try to find a juice of 'em. And hope your child getting well after all ...:-)

Well I had an herb garden at one time. Turns out I'm allergic to echinacea (and LOTS of stuff in addition) so I wouldn't feel safe giving herbs to my son.

But if you are a healthy adult without a lot of allergies I think herbal medicine is a good alternative.:-)

Well I am sorry that your son is not feeling well. It sounds to me that someone needs to culture your sons throat and see what antibiotic it is suseptible to.
(there is a test where they can culture a wound, rash, throat, etc. and then can put it in a petrie dish and send to lab and they can add antibiotics to the petrie dish and see what ones work and what ones don't for the infection that you have.) It sounds to me like your son in not getting the correct antibiotic for his sickness. I have had alot of experience with this due to the fact that my daughter has an immune deficiency and she gets frequent rashes that have to be cultured and tested so that she gets the correct antibiotic. I hope that he gets to feeling better soon.

Thanks for your comment!

My son was cultured when I first took him to the ER.

He's fine now. This was posted about 2 weeks ago. He finally got better.:-)

Hey Angelika I'm sorry that your son is ill - I know ho worrying this can be! I agree that you have to take him to the dr and politely but firmly insist that they examine and treat him carefully and explain just how worried you are! If you are worried about dehydration Make sure he takes 10ml of water every 15 mins til you see the dr ( giving it in an oral syringe is easier - I had to do this with my daughter for 24 hours once as it was the only way to stop her from having to go into hospital! Please let us know how you are doing and how your son is progressing - I will be thinking of you!

Thanks for your comments!

My son is better now. After this post we went back to the Dr and his fever finally started going down.

He's all finished with the antibiotics.:-)
