Is online advertising effective?

Every day when we go online, we get to see lots and lots of online advertising. The question is how effective are they? The advertisers pay a lot for the clicks to their links. I feel the only party that benefits most is the search engines like yahoo, google, msn, etc, etc. What do you think about this issue?
