Online government petitions, what is the point

Online petitions are being put on the new government website left, right and centre. I ask you, however, what is the point. The government has consistently shown that it ignores the public, from protests about the war to petitions against road charging. I personally think that they are just another government ploy to make us think we are having a say whilst they continue on with their 'Big brother' state. What do you guys think?

When the site was being used sensible, like for the stop the payg road tax it was working as it was meant to. Now after the publicity it has received it has just become a big circus. New petitions, some of which are completely frivolous are appearing left, right and center making the website useless. There's even one from some Blackpool people who want the Supercasino license revoked from Manchester and given to Blackpool.
