I recently posted a list of dangerous things for cats. I want to add to that, including dog dangers. Feel free to add more, so we all will be better parents to our furry familes. Pennies: Minted after 1982, contains a high zinc concentration that can poison dogs and cats. Hanging cords on blinds or curtains: Cats may enjoy batting at them, but cords are an entanglement danger. String like materials: such as thread, dental floss, and holiday tinsel are extremely dangerous to both dogs and cats because they can become lodged in the intestines. Mothballs, batteries, and tobaco products: (including cigarette butts) are all highly toxic and should be kept out of your pet's reach. Plants: Lillies are deadly, especially to cats. Also cocoa mulch that attract dogs are deadly to them. Poinsettias casu bad stomach aches. Foods: Chewing gum will cause severe drops in blood sugar and seizures and liver failure in dogs, chocolate can cause death in dogs and cats, garbage or moldy foods, grapes and raisins cause kidney damage in dogs and cats, onions cause depression, diarrhea, vomiting, and weakness, uncooked bread dough , if in rising stage is ingested, the dough can expand in the stomach and may need to be surgically removed. Medications: No human meds should be given to your pets. Curiosity: Be aware where your pets are. Cats enjoy warmth and go inside car engines and dryers. Small dogs and cats can get crushed inside your recliner when you are sitting in it. Crate puppies when you are out, as they eat things that are dangerous because they are teathing. Birds too, need too have windows covered as they do not understand that they cannot fly through glass. Keep the temperature tempid. Don't let them near fans, air ducts, vacumes and printers. Teplon and certain lightbulbs are toxic to birds, avoid using aerosol products and don't let them near water if you are not there, as they can drown. I hope this will help you a little more to keeping you loving pet safe.

Thank you these list are really a great help in keeping your pet safe. I would also like to add that some people think it is funny to get a dog drunk. It is not! It can cause serious liver problems.

those are great- thanks for posting that- i was not aware of the onion thing can cause depression, as a puppy - my Buca used to play with onions- he thought it was a ball, being a puppy though he never showed signs of depression. but those things are always good to know,

Thank you for posting these dangers. I had previously heard of a few of them, like the chocolate and some of the plants. But this is really eye opening. My daughter's poodle very recently got into her purse while she was sleeping. She obviously left it on the floor in Chloe's reach, but she ate silver paper and all, 3 pieces of strawberry chewing gum. The vet said to watch her closely. Thank the Lord she didn't have any complications, which is rare for this little cutie. You can't trust that they will stay out of things, it's nothing to come home and find Miss Chloe in the middle of the dining table snooping around. Thank you again for posting these dangers, hopefully it will make us all more aware of what our pets may be exposed to.

I'm glad it helped you a little, and Praise the Lord that Miss Chloe was okay.

I am glad it helped, and that you feel that way. I wish more people who owned pets felt that way.

I didn't realize that pennies or cords can be dangerous to cats. Thank you for the tips on keeping our pets safe. Our cat likes to go inside shopping bags, can that be dangerous for her?

thank you for posting this great warning for pet owners. I just want to add that if a product is for use only on dogs, it should never be used on cats, and if a product is for use only on cats, it should never be used on dogs. Many houseplants are also dangerous. www.petroglyphsnm.org/petperils/poisonsII.html has a long list of houseplants and outdoor plants that are poisonous to pets.
