When you were pregnant did you experience side pains?

I am 8 months along and cannot seem to sleep because of the pains along my side when I lie down. I'm only supposed to sleep in this one position, and I use lots of pillows to prop myself up as my midwife said that should help, but it doesn't. Is there anything i can do to relieve these pains? It's impossible to sleep through them!

Is it baby's position or stretching type pain? If it's baby's position you can try encouraging her/him to change position by rubbing your belly gently, "talking" to the baby & asking her/him to move or possibly seeing a chiropractor who's experienced with pregnancy. If it's stretching type pain, massage, and/or reflexology may offer you some relief.

It's definitely stretching pain. The baby's position only bothers me when he's got his feet in my ribs and he can usually be encouraged to move with a little prodding from mom. I've tried to massage it but it doesn't seem to help. My midwife suggested propping up my belly, and that seems to offer some relief temporarily, but the pillow usually slips during the night and I wake up hurting again. After reading these posts though, I'm just trying to be happy I don't have to sleep upright in a chair like racheldarcy!

Hi astromama, iM also currently 8 mos pregnant, and yes, im starting to experience side pains too, and its really becoming very uncomfortable, sometimes i couldnt even sleep well because of the pain, so far what i do to get temporary relief is to change positions, but after a while it starts to hurt again-so i change sides again- then hurts again... this cycle goes on until im TOO tired to change positions then i get to sleep it off... so therefore a good solution would be to sleep when you're too tired-or when you're really very very sleepy...i worked for me... =)

That sounds exactly like a typical night for me! It's so frustrating.... but then again I guess the baby is filling out so maybe that's what the extra 'stretch' is all about. The worst part is, I'm usually only really, really sleepy around 5 or 6 in the morning, so I've completely screwed up my sleep cycle. I didn't go to sleep this morning until almost 10 a.m., and I just woke at 3:30. I guess if I have to wait until bone tired to actually rest, I have no choice! NOW I understand what people meant when they said to 'rest now, because you won't be able to later!'. Thanks for your response, and good luck finding a comfortable position!

i had very few of these pains during my pregnancy, usually they were because my son was positioned funky in the womb and just pushing on things that werent meant to be pushed on lol, so id just reposition myself and the pains would go away. i see that ur only suposed to sleep in the one position, but maybe if u try shifting your weight a little bit it may help.

I can sympathise as I had pains in my hips and pelvis when I was in the latter stages of my last pregnancy. I used to lie on one side and manage to sleep for a short while, then turn over and then have to get up and walk around to try and reduce the pain a bit before going back to bed again. I used to put a pillow in between my knees but to be honest nothing really worked for me.

I do the pillow thing, and it helps for awhile but then I'll wake up feeling stiff and sore and have to switch to the other side. Maybe all this sleeplessness is to prepare me for life with a newborn! Although I imagine I'll get better rest when he's living outside of me, because it can't be much worse than this!

I have 3 weeks to go until my daughter is here, and believe me I have every pain there is under the sun with her. my son wasn't even this bad! The thing that helps me the most with my pains is a heating pad wrap in a towel(so is doesn't get to hot). I also put a pillow between my knees, and sometimes i prop my feet up with a pillow. I also sleep with two pillows underneath my head. I also prop a pillow behind my back so i am sleeping on slant, that sometimes help depending on her postioning. i just try to tire myself out as much as i can throughout the day too. it can help when you are so tired that you sleep through the pain.
