Do you try to get your kids to do community service? |
|
Do you tell your kids about the benefits of doing community service/volunteer work? Have they asked you about helping out in the community? My mom used to get me to do volunteer work when I was younger but was reluctant on doing it. I didn't understand why people would want to work for free but as I grew older I learned how wonderful it can be and enjoy helping others in any way possible. I have done volunteer work for the Multiple Schlerosis Society as well as my current company before they hired me. I just heard on the radio about this website that may help encourage kids as well as adults to do volunteer work. It is a really neat site. Here is the link to the site: http://www.dosomething.org/

The child will more likely help out if they see their parents doing this type of work and also knowing what it can do for the people they help out as well as for themselves. It should not be forced as it is an option not a requirement.

2. MrsSgtB (217) | 2 years ago | First I just want to say Thank you for volunteering with the MS society...that one hits close to my heat. Second I am not sure if this is really consider community service but I do take my daughter to her room and have a bag with us and ask her to pick out toys she no longer plays with and donate it to other kids that do not have any toys. She is usually happy to do it..but then there is times where she is like no way I want that toy. I think she just does not fully understand yet. She will be 4 in Sept.

kgwat70 (10130) | 2 years ago | I enjoyed working with the MS Society and helping out in any way that I could. It was a nice experience. Funny thing is that the person in charge there, now works in the same company that I am working in now.:-) I think what you and your daughter are doing is considered community service since she is donating toys to people who really need or want toys that can not afford them. You both are giving back to the community.:-)

kgwat70 (10130) | 2 years ago | I do and try to help others whenever I can and have enjoyed it very much and learned new things. I think that is great that your high schools and town require students to do community service. I am not sure if our schools do such a thing though they try and recommend people to do volunteer or community service.

4. crazynurse (5718) | 2 years ago | Yup, I sure do! My children's high school does as well. Community service is a part of the Honor Society criteria. A student is selected based on a target grade point average, but to stay in the society once selected requires community service hours as well as maintaining the grade point average. I think this is a great method to encourage community service. SAdly, that only hits about 1/10 of the student body. I think all children should have community service taught at home and at school, I would actually like to see it placed into the required curriculum in some manner.

kgwat70 (10130) | 2 years ago | That is nice that community service is an important part of being in the Honor Society. I think it is good to have someone who is willing to help others and the less fortunate. I agree that this would be a great subject in school.

5. hockeygal4ever (5459) | 2 years ago | My kids walk ever year in the MS walk as I have MS and they have seen the benefits of the program locally. They also used to volunteer with me every year during each holiday, even the smallest of holidays (St. Pattys, Valentines, etc.) as we'd go to a local shelter that housed families and bake cookies with the kids. For many of them the idea of baking was something totally new! Can you imagine being 8 or 9 and never even knowing what it's like to bake cookies and laugh in the kitchen decorating them with your family? My kids couldn't believe that there were kids out there that lived like that. So for many, many years we volunteered at the house to do this. It was our own "program" so to speak and while we were asked to do a special feature in the local paper I declined. I didn't want special attention for doing something that should be second nature to us and I didn't want my kids thinking that they should be rewarded by any way other then seeing the excitement of these kids and the laughter they experienced with them. Unfortunately since my cancer we haven't done it again but we will eventually get back to it I'm sure.

kgwat70 (10130) | 2 years ago | This was so nice to hear and I am sure you and your son will enjoy helping other people. It is very rewarding to help people and making others happy. I am sure it will make your son a better person and it can also help land him a good job later on in life when he is old enough to start working.
