Is the "Family Unit" a thing of the past?

I came from a large family of 8 kids...4 boys, 4 girls. Mom & Dad didn't have a lot, but they sure knew how to make a house a "home", and how to demonstrate their love for us all. I know many modern families are under entirely new pressures than my folks were...both parents working long hours...stressing out from careers, finances, peer pressures, extreme scheduling skills needed to juggle all the 'busy-ness' of life as they know it.
But what has happened along the way to the Family Unit?
That precious unsung institution of love, strength, hope, encouragement and security. The 'group-therapy' session at the dinner table...the healthy debate about world events...the laughter, the crying, the sharing of love and affection so desparately necessary to offset the harsh bombardments from life itself!
