My 5 years old daughter is very fond of watching cartoons, fairies, princess, tom & jerry, barbie & etc. She can watch movie for straight 5-7 hours a day then after a few hours she will go back again & watch again for another few hours. How can I stop her?

Actually you can let her watch the cartoon, but you should choose the cartoon she watch.
I recommend you subscribe cable TV because they had Disney channels which has educational cartoon and fun to children. So whatever carton your daughter watch she will learn something.

I don't think she should be watching tv for 5-7 hours a day. 1-2 hours is enough. I think you should do more activities with her. Why don't you get some scrap paper, some glue, scissors and glitter and do some craft with her? Or play a board game, or take her to the park and play ball with her? My little sister (8yrs) is like that. She'll watch the Disney channel/cartoons for hours and hours. When my mother thinks she's watched enough, she just turns off the tv and tells her to find something else to do.

I watch a couple of children who would love to do this everyday of the week but they don't because I am the adult and won't let them. They are allowed to watch the tv for as long as I say it is ok and then I turn it off and we do something. I pull out toys and we play, we build a fort,we read a book. All of these things help children to expand their minds and learn new things. Granted they can learn things from the tv but if you let them sit in front of the tv, this will allow our children to become obese and then everything starts going down hill form there.

Yeah, I think that's right. I tried it already but she easily fed up playing those toys & books.

If you don't want her to watch television, shut it off.

She's my only daughter, sometimes i feel pitty with her if no one plays with her. That's why I let her watch.

My suggestion is to little by little manage her tv watching habbits like giving her an alternative activities like what my sister do with my nephew. She will invite some of his playmates to stay at home to play their toys and prepare delicious stuff for the kids.

I tried it already, but sometimes it's hard to resist if your daughter make "lambing" with me, and asking to watch cartoons. But ofcourse I won't stop trying it again. Thanks & keep intouch ok! We miss you!

Turn the T.V. OFF. Get creative. Find other things for her to do with you. Go outside and play in the yard or a park. Take a walk. Do some arts and crafts. It doesn't take much, really. Just a little imagination. And by the way, you're in control not the child, If you redirect her attention, you both could have alot more fun!

Thanks, maybe I need to try hard & hard to get her attention out of tv. God Bless.

She can make a list of her favorite things to do, then you can make it fun by having her do them and checking off the fun activity. I used to have that problem with my daughter. She is an only child so she was lonely during the summer. I would let her watch t.v. for one hour during lunch time, the another 30 minutes at 3 o'clock, then for one more hour at night before bed. She was only allowed to watch t.v. if she occupied herself doing something else. Like she had a notebook she would draw in, and I would look through it to see if she really did anything when she said she was drawing. She also had a lot of books and I would tell her to read out of it then write down how she would change the story. I also let her decorate her room with things we boght from the store. Like paint by number posters she could paint them then hang them up, or make a door hanger or make a sign for her door. She even made a mailbox so we could put little notes in it for her to read.

Sometimes I would let her get on the computer and play learning games, and she loved that. SHe is a creative child who just needed some company, so if she could do something and stay in the same room as me, then I would let her be around while I worked from home. Giving her little chores to do like cleaning the windows or counter tops is good. She can take the money she earns from that and buy activity stuff. I also had a doll that I let her put pretend make up on and she liked to do her hair. I think she was happy as long as she was not all by herself all day. Summertime was always a challenge, because I didn't really like the neighborhood children. They were too old for her or they were not supervised. We managed to make it through those summers pretty good. Now she is 12 and I never have any problems with the t.v. She is home for Spring break and could careless about the t.v. She has a neighborhood friend now, too.

I think the more options you give your daughter, the more things she will do, and t.v. will always be a favorite thing while they are small, but you can help them get interested in other things too.

i don't see why you need to stop 5-year-old kid from watching katoons, faries, and things like these. on the country, she can learn from it naturally and saves you time to tell stories. Isn't it a good thing? to inspire her creativity?

One good suggestion is make her recount what she sees from TV, on one hand, she practices her communication ability,on the other, it takes up her time and cuts off her TV-watching time .

Don't forget she also needs a good lister to share her world!
