Cleopatra's Needle in London needs glass !

On a recent visit to London I had a good look at Cleopatra's Needle, which stands on the banks of the Thames river. To me, this icon of Egyptian stone masonry and world history is in a shockingly wrongful state. Exposed to the elements, the stone may be hardy, but will be being eroded by constant vehicle fumes and vibrations too. As a minimum, i believe the obelisk should be encased in a toughened glass for protection. What are your thoughts ?

Having also seen this obelisk, I'd have to say I agree with you. It looks to have eroded quite a bit. I don't see how encasing it in protective glass would be too extremely costly, but leaving it to the elements could be - we could lose an important link to an ancient time.

Well yeah, being as you saw it with me :p But the erosion could have stemmed from the last few thousand years of course..what i see is the change in location having a detrimental effect on it's future. Indeed, as you say, the encasing wouldn't cost too much - it's already at risk from vandals and such a casing would help in those ways too.
