Dubt on Gandalf (Lord of the Rings)...

I think it's because he doesn't want to depend solely on his magic. I think he only uses it when he has to. I think it is good because if everyone always depended on him and his magic for everything they'd never learn to defend themselves. I think that's probably another reason.

With the gift of magic there comes responsibility. Just because you can does not mean you should. Long thought is required before we wield a power. The effects can be long reaching and without our scope. At his age too and the understanding he has perhaps it was expected that he use his magic and that was his advantage to not to do so. I was content with this performance. There was enough magic to be believable that he was indeed a wizard. Grey or White.

he did not wanted to be consume by the power of wand. he has used the power when needed since he saw no option like saving Faramir when they were retreating from osligargth after they were attacked by hte orks from river since he had no choice. like i said he did want the power to take over him

until gandalf became gandalf, the white his powers were very limited. after he becomes white he does break saurman's staff. we can onlyy assume that he doen't use much magic after that as he didn't have to or that he lost most of his powers when he came from valinor. remember saurman was originally meant to lead the wizards against sauron before he became evil.

You're talking about the film, I think. Aren't you interested in the books? The personality of Gandalf is more devolopped on "The Hobbit" while the story of his mission in the world is narrated in the "Silmarillion". Gandalf has been sent by Illuvatar, the God over all gods (Valars) when he realized the other one sent (Saruman) was corrupted by darkness. So he had not as much magic knowledges as Saruman, but he was more clever.

Well..if you really want to get techinal and philosophical, okay. First of all..from my understanding of thr wizards and spellcasters of Middle Earth, the power is in their voice, Gandalf uses his magic through the movie..destorying the bridge to save the fellowship and take down the Balrog and into his ascension into White. Indeed the Nazgul have their own magic, such as their demonic screeches, which in the books describes as the effect on men being to cower in catonic fear, it was Gandalf's voice that kept the men of Minas Tirith fighting. Secondly, I think that if Gandalf used too powerful of a spell he would kill those he was trying to protect..sure, he could probably very easily destroy the whole of the Orc army with a giant fireball from the sky, but that would end up killing the Men of middle Earth as well. Thirdly, if he always used his magic, the Men of middle earth would come to depend on it and become cowards, always begging for aide from the White Wizard.*deep breathe* And on another side note, did anyone know that Sauron, is actually of the same order that Gandalf and Saruman are from, only he "ascended" even farther into the colors, and is an ultimate Black...he was Sauron the Black before become the Dark Lord of Mordor. and his master before that. I think the order of mages and Wizards is called the Order of Excellion..I'm not sure. but yeah,^.^
