What do I have to do to get my cats to stop fighting? I believe it all started when I accidentally ran over Cougar's tail with the computer chair. Clarissa was sitting next to her, and I think Cougar associates the bad experience with Clarissa and that Clarissa caused her pain. Now, I have to put Cougar down in the basement at night so Clarissa can come out from under the bed and do her business. Clarissa won't come out from hiding because Cougar attacks her everytime she sees her. Both cats are spayed. It's been going on for almost a year now, and it's just ridiculous! I watch "The Dog Whisperer" and use some of his techniques on Cougar (HAHAHA!) and she has actually calmed down a bit, but she does still harass Clarissa whenever she sees her. They used to be best pals, now they can't even be in the same room together. Any hints on what I can do?

I just saw your other post in regard to this one. I've always had a multiple cat home so I've been in this situation. Do your cats have their own litter boxes and eating places? You may have to create these spaces and do this for some time as Cougar believes he is king of the house over Clarissa. When Cougar attempts to attack Clarissa you can clap your hands so that he will get startled and stop it. I don't like this but it's also a cat training tactic and that is to spray him with water from a water bottle when he does it. I hope that these things help; they may never be close again but will learn to tolerate one another.

Bless you for answering this! Thank you! Our cats do have separate litter boxes. I found this necessary when the fighting began. As Clarissa stays under the bed all day while Cougar (also female) is upstairs, they still have the same food dish, because Clarissa comes out to eat and use the litter box after I put Cougar downstairs to sleep. Cougar is basically our daytime cat and Clarissa is our nighttime cat. Poor thing!
I've taken some advice from Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, and use my fingers as "teeth" to let Cougar know I'm head of the pack. I don't hurt her, I just let her know that I'm the boss. She has become submissive to me, yet she still attacks Clarissa. I've heard of the water bottle technique but have yet to give it a try.
The other problem is, though, that even when I put Cougar downstairs, Clarissa is very hesitant to come out and is nervous for the first half hour of coming out from under the bed. Even if I get control of Cougar, Clarissa has really become a "fraidy cat." I feel so bad for her!
Thank you for your response!!

I wish there were more that I could suggest and if I do come across something, I'll send you a message through mylot. I have heard of the dog whisperer and like his training methods; it is such a great idea that you are trying to establish 'rank' in the house by baring your teeth to Cougar. I will have to remember that. I know this is not fun for you or Clarissa so I hope my suggestions are of some help. Take care and have a great weekend!
