I always have been interested in growing herbs in pots. I have tried it before and did well with basil and mint. I want to try cilantro, as it's my favorite spice/herb to cook with.
Any special tricks to growing these herbs? Can they be grown inside if you live in an apartment? All year round?

I use a lot of cilantro and so I grow it myself, and it's quite easy to grow. It will bolt in hot weather, and it's an annual, so you want to trim back the flowers until late fall, and keep it cool in the summer. It will spread like a weed if you're not careful!

Well try this friend
Take sandy soil in a pot, take the cilantro seeds, rub them with an old used shoe, plant in the pot, add little water, am sure it will grow, though i don't know the scientific reasons behind..
Thank you so much.

Herbs tend to like a poorer soil. At least 6 hours of sunlight for most of them, some do like shade. Potted herbs can do quite well, except in the dry environment of the house in the winter. Need to set them on a tray of pebbles with water in it too. That could help keep them in a bit more humid area. Use potting soil for any pot, indoors or out. Regular dirt will harden and become to difficult to garden in when in a pot. Find yourself a good herb book, whether at the library or purchase one and find out all you can about the herb before you grow it. Duplicating where it normally grows will give you the best results. Good luck with this worthwhile endeavor.

Hello songbirdnaimh.....
Cilantro, parsley, thyme, oregano, sage, even chives are as easy to grow as basil and need the same conditions for good growth. I always had several indoor window boxes and large pots with herbs when I lived in the city. If you have a balcony you can even get cherry tomatoes to do well.

I've never tried growing herbs inside, but I would think that they would do well as long as they have enough sunlight each day.
I've grown herbs outside but you have to be careful with all the mints or they will overtake your whole yard. My favorite was a wonderful Chocolate Mint; it was a dark brown and very aromatic.
A little trick for a growing pot would be one of those plastic window boxes. They hold quite a few plants and they can be set on the windowsill or hung with the holders.

I've tried growing herbs in pots before, and I know you need to watch how much (or little) you water. Terra cotta pots absorb water, so plants dry out much quicker in those. I just stuck my little cilantro plants in the ground (with some compost and fertilizer) and they have shot up like crazy! I love cilantro too!

you could make a window box
or buy one of the gardening appliances they sell now for that
I can't stand cilantro, any other herb is ok though.
