It's a little after 4:30 in the morning and I'm at work watching "Mary Poppins." This movie never fails to enthrall me. It is well written and acted and the songs are wonderful. I find myself singing along, which is not at all uncommon for me because I love to sing. It definitely is a period film, though, because if it were released in this day and age, I don't think it would be so successful. Of course, it is a beloved Disney film now so because of its classic status, it is still selling. I think largely because of those of us who saw it first in the theatres back in the 60's. I still remember seeing it the first time. Of course, those of you who are younger don't understand but back then there were no Video or DVD players, so seeing a movie at the theatre was the only way to see it. Nowadays, I tend to wait until things come out on DVD unless it's something I really want to see in the theatre. I'm glad I got to see "Mary Poppins" and other movie classics in the theatre. I remember seeing "The Sound of Music" when it came out as well as "How The West Was Won" and "The Jungle Book" and "The Aristocats" and "Song of the South," which I still don't understand why Disney won't release it. Their reasoning is just not justified. There are too many movies out there with much worse racism than "Song of the South" and that movie is just wonderful and kids should be able to enjoy it. I also remember seeing all of the "Planet of the Apes" original films in the theatre. And, the original "Poseidon Adventure." And, "The Towering Inferno," "The Hindenberg," and "The Island At The Top Of The World." I realize that some of you who are younger may not have heard of some of those but they were all great films if you get a chance to see them. Well, I guess I'm going on a bit so I'll stop.

My first question would be what were you doing up at that hour of the morning? LOL just kidding! I agree, although i have seen Mary poppins on VCR (i am a gen X-er) and the Sound of music i am quiet sure they would be best enjoyed on the large screen of theater! I have also seen the original "poseidon adventure" and "Planet of the Apes" starring Charleston Heston right! The rest of the movies you mentioned i havent seen yet but i will give "the Island at the top of the world" a go this weekend! i just hope its available on rental! we dont get many old quality movies on rental here in Pakistan!

I also saw the original Planet of the Apes in the theatre. However I was so young that I don't remember almost any of it. As for the Aristocats I lost count of how many times I saw them when I was little :) :) Same goes for the Jungle Book :) I love Mary Poppins (wonder if Spielberg's remake will hold the same magic), especially the songs :) (I sang along too and I have no doubt that were I to see it at this very moment I would sing along also :) ). I've only seen Sound of Music at an older age but I liked it nevertheless (by the way, did you know it's after a true story? :) ). Unfortunately I don't remember seeing any of the other movies you mention but I know exactly what you mean by this post :)

Oh my! I know all of those films! They are all so wonderful. I have even gotten my kids to see Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and The Aristocats. They absolutely loved them. We have several of them on VHS, but I would like to get them on DVD as well. Many of the movies out today are pretty awesome, but as far as I'm concerned, you can't beat some of those classics.
