Who among here in mylot have been one of those youth activist who rallied on the streets?
I was sixteen years old then and studying in an exclusive Catholic school for girls run by nuns and priests. Students there were not supposed to do anything but study under a very sheltered environment. But I was the odd one out and my classmates used to look at me very strangely as if I had two heads when I started to spout about ‘isms’, social justice, poverty & reforms. I came from a different environment than my classmates and at home and in our neighborhood I was exposed to the harsh realities of life. So at sixteen years old I already joined rallies, slept on the street and mingled with the leftist groups. I had then the youth’s idealism, impatience and burning passion to play an active part in reforming our society and government. It was then that I also got to know the true activists, who actually sacrificed a life of comfort, live away from their families, in order to pursue their ideals and work for the betterment of our society. They are the people whom I have found to be truly noble and until now they are still fighting for what they believe. They would never give up until they get the reforms that they envisioned. They are the important watchdog of our country who keeps our government and leader on their toes – which to my mind makes them the true champions for the realization of social & economic reforms.

I was never an activist. I saw that the way for me to make change was from within. I wanted to change the way teachers treated students. So I became a teacher. Some changes have taken place but not all the reforms that I would like to see. I am 51 now and may not see the changes take place. I have found that people resist change because they feel comfortable with what they know even if it is not what they like. Change takes longer than I anticipated.

I know that change would take longer and I may not see the fruits of what I have worked for in this lifetime. Each of us has different ways of effecting change and that is good because we just can't all be activists. There has to be some people who has to work for other problems that our society has. Thanks for responding!
