In the russian far east, where decades of poaching have diminished the siberian tigers' numbers to an estimated 500,American biologist Dale Miquelle and other conservationists are waging an unsung battle to keep the largest member of the cat family from disappearing.their odds are not good. Many villagers regard tigers as a nuisance, often not hesitating to kill one if it has preyed on a dog or cow.illegal logging continues to erode tiger habitats.and poorly equipped forest rangers are no match for poachers who feed a thriving traditional medicine market, where top dollar is paid for every ounce of a tiger:bones, skin, meat and even whiskers.
