Do You Think That Depression Is Passed Down Genetically, Or Environmentally?

I think that some depression is passed down environmentally-via lifestyle, stress in the home, etc. Kids who grow up in dysfunctional environments tend to suffer depression. Do you agree or disagree? Why? I would like to know your thoughts on this.

I think it's both. The nature versus nurture debate. But I think NATURE has a bigger role in depression. That's actually been proven to be the case.

Nature may play a bigger role, but I do think that environment has a lot to do with how serious, how much progress, and successful day to day management. Thanks for responding.

i know there is a genetic link with depression. When I was finally diagnosed and have been doing quite well for a long time now, I was asked questions about family history and learned that as far back as I could go, someone had depresions issus on my maternal side...I'm sure enviornment plays a part also..
I am just so thankful there are such good treatments out there, good meds. Without mine, I would be in a rubber room the rest of my life!!! I don't doubt that for a second!!
I believe support from others who suffer from different forms helps others.. Sometimes knowing there is support even by web is very conforting !!!
