Movie Remakes - Some movies should be left alone and not remade over

What do you think about some of the movies today? The many remakes of older versions of movies. Movies such as Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, Willy Wonka, The Thing, The Fly, Dawn of the Dead, Thomas Crowne Affair, and one I know that have been remade quite a few times King Kong. I always wondered why are some movies even remade. Is it because of more modern day graphics or do the producer feel that a remade of a movie that was once so popular he could make even more money and it be even more popular? Has Hollywood just lost some of it's creativity? It puzzles me and moreso when the remade ends up getting the thumbs down after the reviews. I admit I did enjoy the remake of Willy Wonka..lol What movie remakes did/do you enjoy? What movie remakes really disappointed you? What are some movie remakes you can name? What movies you think shouldn't be remade and left alone? What are your thoughts to movies being remade over again?

I think it's mostly the commercial aspect that inspires a remake.I think they feel the original movie already does the presell for a remake, especially ,when it's a roaring hit.Even if it's just to compare and criticize , people will like to watch a remake. If they like it very well and even if they don't like it as much as the original, the money still keeps rolling in.A remake guarantees an interest in the movie. In our country,a famous movie was recently remade and we expected it to be the same story and it was,but the movie came as a major shock to everyone because they changed the climax that twisted the whole movie.I think, the fact that movies these days are technologically superior only helps the remakes further.

That's very true. I enjoy watching remakes that I'm interested in or the trailors seem to be just a got to watch, I will.. Most of the time I pass them up. Some remakes actually are really good. Some Shouldn't of even attempted

I hate to think of the recent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a remake of a movie. To me, it's a more faithful adaptation of the novel. Even though it's the second adaptation, I don't think of it as a remake of the first adaptation. Anyway, in these years, film producers won't finance a movie unless it can be compared to some other movie that made money. This attitude creates an atmosphere where new ideas are hard to get made, so a lot of remakes are happening.

i guess movie makers are making remakes is because people don't want to watch old old movies again... like when i saw the old king kong movie, i got so bored that i could not even appreciate and did not even finish watching it. movie makers are doing remakes because of the profit it would make and that movie viewers are sure to watch it because of curiosity. i've seen willy wonka too and i liked it. i watched the old "the chronicles of narnia" and i got so bored. but when i watched the new version, although the story was the same, i felt that as if i was watching a new movie again.

I love movies, can't get enough of them, but I loathe the remake movies, I always say that you can't make something great if it already was great. It seems they never better the original one even if they are years old, I think they are for that time and should stay that way. Also I think the time they were made was a more innocent time and all the great special effects they put into the remake, really doesn't do justice to the movie.

I think a lot of the reason movies are remade is because Hollywood is running out of original ideas. That's notto say that all remakes are horrible. I've actually liked some of them like Willy Wonka, King Kong, Little Women (although that may not count since it's based on a book.)

What I think is movie producers are starting to run out of their own ideas for movies because everything has been almost done so now they are bring back the classics. Although I think this is a way on cheating movie go'ers out of money some of the old remakes have been really good like "Gone In 60 Seconds" and "007" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacure" but its when the producers start making films like how it all started in the begining for example the new Texas Chainsaw Massacure The Beginning made no sense because it told the story how it all started but it was after the other movie. Oh well I think theres going to be hundreds of old remakes coming out of the closet soon I jhust hope they are good.lol

I didn't think 'An Affair to Remember' should have been remade. I didn't much take to Annette Bening and Warren Beatty making their own version in 1994 under the title 'Love Affair.' Now, 'Cheaper by the Dozen' was an awesome movie, even though it is an old one. When they decided to redo it with Steve Martin I was a little annoyed. However, they didn't even stick to the script, just the idea, so I found it to be enjoyable, although 'Cheaper by the Dozen 2' was better the the first one with Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt. I would like to see a remake of the film 'Arsenic and Old Lace.' It's a classic, but done with the right people, it could be great.

I just happened to find this discussion after starting a new one with a similar theme. I definitely believe there are some movies that simply should not be remade because there's no way to improve on them and they don't need to be updated so they should continue to be enjoyed in their original form. Psycho was a movie that shouldn't have been remade, in my opinion. The original was a classic in the truest sense of the word and it's not the fault of anyone involved with the remake that it just didn't measure up. I haven't seen the remake of The Longest Yard and, to be honest, I really have no desire to because they did it right the first time. The new version of Planet of the Apes was a total disappointment to me. It wasn't really even a remake make as far as I was concerned and was hard to follow and didn't have the impact of the original. I know they remade The Goodbye Girl, I think it was a TV movie, but I didn't watch that because, again, I didn't see the point. I think in some cases if you've seen and really enjoyed the original you're not as likely to like the remake. I also realize it sometimes takes a new cast and other updates to pull in a new, younger audience but in a way that's a shame because there are some movies made decades ago that are timeless classics and are just as wonderful today as they were years ago for audiences of all ages. Few remakes become classics in their own right - at best they'll always be simply a remake of a classic and at worst they'll be a poor remake of a classic. Why not just let us enjoy the classic? I liked Willy Wonka, but the second was, in a few ways, more faithful to the book while in others it took lots of liberties. There was the explanation of the Umpaloompas, but there wasn't any backstory to Willy. There also wasn't any robots... But both Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp were good Willy's, but Gene's hair was more like the illos in the book.

There are alot of good old movies no one ever watches because they are old so I think in a way some of them are a good idea to keep the story or the moral of the story alive.I have also heard that alot of the old black and white movies are ruined because they werent cared for or because the film they were made on has just erroded away. Its kind of crazy that they can spend so much on new movie production but cant take care of some of the classic movies.

I liked the last King Kong movie much more than any of the older ones I've seen, and I thought the remake of The Fly was much better than the original. I didn't really like the new Willy Wonka that much, though. I'm not sure why, but I think it's a combination of the movie having a completely different atmosphere than the old one (especially those awful new Oompa Loompa songs), and the fact that I didn't like Willy Wonka near as much this time around. I really like Johnny Depp, he's a great actor, but I think the way the original role was written was much better, and I really loved Gene Wilder in that role.

It is true that in today's cinema remakes have become a menace. This is basically because the directors are losing out on new ideas and just want to do what has already been done. Take the Indian film industry. A super hit Telugu film is remade in Tamil. A Malayalam in Hindi and so on... Its all about money in the end.

I agree it is all about the money. Some are winners some aren't. The graphics wise mean alot now a days.
