Sewing |

| Are there any sewers out there? Who do you sew for? What sort of sewing do you do? For what reasons? I have been sewing all my life, both out of necessity and for enjoyment. Currently most of my sewing is mending and a bit of quilting. Also just puttery little projects such as making tote bags or make-up bags. I have used a huge variety of sewing machines in my life, all the way from the Wal-Mart cheapies to top of the line machines, both new and used. | | | | | |

| | My mother is so awesome with sewing. Her talents are strongest in quilting, I just can't believe it sometimes. She likes to make gifts and saves a lot of money doing so. It is her relaxation and I am always impressed by the outcome. I on the other hand...could use some work in this department.... | | | | | | |

| | lol, I imagine we can all use some work in improving our skills. I know I can for sure. But, have you ever noticed that the recipents of our efforts almost never complain. They seem to treasure the things we make, flaws and all. | | | |

Ive made some dresses for myself and the next door lady.. My mom was very good at sewing, knitting, and quilting.. She cant do them anymore do to health problems.. I think she only knits blankets for some children org. | | | | | | |

| | Do you knit??? I do lots of that too. NONE of it is ever done perfectly, but I enjoy it and as I said to the previous response, recipients rarely complain. | | | |

| | I tried to knit but couldnt get the hang of it.. and it would come out lopsided.. So I gave up on it.. I enjoy sewing but I am not the greatest at sewing... My nightgowns comes out ok.. Its those zippers and button holes I cant do very well.. I know pratice makes perfect.. lol.. as my mother used to say.. She also said if you cant do it right then dont do it at all.. She was a perfectionist when it came to sewing,kniting,quilting.. I think that sometimes if I made something I would show her and she would say well this is wrong or that is wrong.. So I dont show her anything anymore or I dont ask her for problems that I am having.. I go to Walmart and ask the ladies there on how to do it.. But now Walmart dont sell material and pattern anymore. | | | |

| | I had forgotten that Wal-Marts are closing their fabric dept. The woman I talked to said they were doing it as they remodel each store. The one I shop at most will be open close to two more years. The other one next close to me will lose the dept by May of this year. I am hoping to get some extra good buys on fabrics, patterns and notions to stock up on. I have signed every patition, and emailed WalMart headquarters saying how much I like the fabric dept. but none of those efforts seem to be enough for headquarters to change their plans. | | | |

| | To me Walmart is doing it for Walmart and not for the customers anymore.. When my Walmart closed down the fabric department the only thing they had on sale was the fabric.. The patterns was sent back to the companies. They still sell some sewing stuff.Like needles, pins etc.. The next Walmart closest to me still sell the fabrics and pattern etc. I was there afew weeks ago and we were talking on what Walmart is doing, she said to call Walmart headquaters and tell them how you feel about.. I said why they dont care about the customers anymore.. It wouldnt do any good.. Within a year there fabric department will be gone too.. I have enough fabric from Walmart that closed down to last me awhile.. | | | |

| | I have a sewing machine I bought from walmart. I have no sewing skills at all. I just sew koolaid purses. I want to sew somethings for my daughter. She loves light and springy dresses. I just can't grasp all the pattern stuff. and sewing zippers is hel* for me. This may tell how much I can't sew. | | | | | | |

| | I have never done those koolaid things. But patterns and such can be a bit daunting when you first start out. May I suggest you buy some of the not as fitted patterns at first. Basic pull over tops, skirts and pants. All can be done without button holes and zippers. Maybe go with super cheap dollar a yard fabric to practice on. If you use fabric with a little bit of stretch is nice too. Thing to remember about those fabrics is to put the stretch so it goes around the body, not up and down. You will find as you go through the process you will learn lots. In six months you may well be laughing at your 'fear' of starting out. | | | |

| | I too have sewn my whole life. I just plain enjoy it. I made and still do try to make my own clothes. I made my wedding dress. I have made all the curtains and drapes in my house. Also I have done slipcovers. Now my prime thing to sew is crafts that I sell locally, when I have time, because the main things that I now sew are skating outfits for my daughter. She is a competitive roller skater, so between new costumes, every year, and practice outfits all year long it keeps me quite busy. But sewing is so much cheaper, and I really do enjoy it. I feel a special bond with her also in doing this. | | | | | | |

| | Sounds as if you do some very interesting sewing. The closest to costuming I have ever done is halloween costumes for kids and grandkids. I have done a lot of the home dec stuff also. The last few years I have really started doing thrift types of sewing. Remakes, using up scraps ect. lolol, this has become so obsessive that I hate to ever throw out anything. Even the thread snips and trimmings I keep thinking would make dandy stuffing for door stops and draft stoppers. I think that part of this is my rebellion against a society that wastes so very much. | | | |

| | My parents got me a sewing machine almost 2 years ago. So far I've made pajama pants, koolaid bags for family and blankets from kits. I'm having fun with it, I'm really glad they got one for me. We have two boys and I thought if nothing else I'd for sure get my use out of it mending clothes. I just got it out again this week to mend up my pile. My machine is a cheaper one, and only does basic stuff. I didn't want one that does all that electronic stuff. Although it would be cool to have some fun stitches on it, but I can go to my parents to do that. My stepmom is a great sewer and has the high dollar machines, but she uses them a lot. She made a lot of our clothes in high school. | | | | | | |

| | Cool. I find if I leave the sewing machine set up someplace that I use it more. That was especially true when I had kids at home. Enjoy. | | | |
