At today's meeting, we left the meeting place to walk down the street and visit the new local quilt shop. It was a beautiful warm afternoon. I had called ahead and the shopkeeper met us there. She was so good about answering the girls questions and showing them many different types of quilts. We took our troop quilts with us. The shopkeeper inspected them and let the girls know she was very impressed with their detailed hand sewn work. She showed the girls that it is more common to use sewing machines now. In the back of the shop she had a big quilt frame with a sewing machine that uses a laser to follow fancy patterns. The shopkeeper then took them to the cutting table and demonstrated how to make a variety of cuts to layout and create patterns. It was like a light bulb went off in the room....one of the girls perked up and shouted "So that is what my geometry teacher has been trying to show me!!" We all laughed. The shopkeeper then agreed that to make a quilt you have to use and understand geometry.
Have you taken any outings or trips that have been helpful in teaching your troop new ways of looking at things??

So Sorry I missed this one!
I have taken my girls to a couple of museums. They are museums about our history and the growth of our towns. They learned a lot especially about the old fashion styles. The neatest thing to them was the loop weaving. They all wanted to try it. We bought a few of the kits. None of us realized that the loops came from the ends of socks that had been trimmed after sewing them. Even I learned a lot on these trips.

A few of our scouts are math and science whiz kids. They did not realize that math was being used in some of their crafts until someone outside the troop told them. Very eye opening to the girls. Now I also have learned something from you. I did not know about the loops. I always thought there was something familiar about them but did not know exactly what it was. Now I know, thanks to you. I love going to museums but my girls think it is boring. I wish I could sneak it in on them but for some reason, all the museums actually say "museum" on their buildings. hahaha

Thank you for best!LOL
We use math in a lot of things. In making the lop loom designs, for example,in order to make a design we will at least need to divide the number of pegs by the colors to see what we will need.
I only had 4 go to the last museum. We all got in free, and There was only me, my daughter, her best friend, and her mother. Two other girls that were at there Dad's and he brought them, but only one was in my troop, the other was a brownie. I will give them a patch for going, and count on the ones Local Lore and mine and her friend already have it. I will let the Brownie leader know that she has done a trip with us and it can count towards her Bridging.
The first we went on I actually had I think 8 or 9 out of 12 and 1 was not even a girl scout but wanted to go! There was a lot in it and we finished our Yarn & Arts, as well as the Local Lore while there. And I Told them they only got the patch if they went. They were not real excited, but they had a really good time.
There was a house behind that was part of the museum and one of my girls' grand mother or great aunt of some thing had lived there YEARS ago. She was VERY adamant about it, and I believe her. Some I may doubt, but this one I believe. The lady giving the tour did not seem to believe her though.
Between her and the one that is into things from the past cultures really got the others into the tour!

Sometimes the girls will not want to go somewhere but once they get there and see what is there for them, then they have a wonderful time. I can not count how many times this has happened. If I can get them in front of something, I have a chance of them liking it. There have been situations where only a few girls go to the event. They come back to the meeting and share their experience with the rest of the girls and then all of them want to go the next time.
They have to chit chat between themselves sometimes and it can really make a difference.
