What happened to Opey's mother on the Andy Griffith Show?

I just asked my girlfriend what happened to Opey's mom. She said I don't know, MyLot. So I am asking you guys. What happened to Opey's mother?

They mentioned once that Andy was a widow. I think it was in the pilot episode, also the only episode in which they mention that andy and barney are cousins.

With family controlling the police force this might be some kind of a Mayberry cover up. Someone call Internal Affairs.

I have to admit ignorance on this one...I do know she passed away at some point, maybe in childbrith. Divorce would have been out of the question at the time the series was made.
