how come our cellphones are different channels in any countries? / myLot

my friend from the us send me a free cellphone that he used it before the problem is i dont have a signal could this be a different channel from the us?

I'm not sure about any other bands, but I know that the GSM frequencies are different here in U.S. then europe & asian countries... Here, they use 850/1900 Mhz... In Europe & Asian countries, they use 900/1800 Mhz frequencies...
