there are growing number of cultures who use insects in their cuisine. from worms to cockroaches to beetles and spiders. those creepy crawlers have been a part of different delicacies. but are they really sanitary and safe? can you actually eat them if you are given such food? are we that desperate for food that even the smallest insect can be a feast at the table?

Well, I'm not really sure much the sanitary issues of eating insects differ from those of eating any other type of animal. If anything, I would say the danger would be in the lack of research on food-bourne illnesses that could be caught from eating insects. I mean, we're taught exactly how to prepare other items we eat, or what items have to be stored or cooked at what temperature in order to kill the bacteria they have, but how do we know these things about insects if it hasn't been studied?
Personally, I'm a pretty picky eater, so I'm not particulary inclined to try eating insects. But considering how fast some of them breed, they woudln't be a bad food source if we could figure out what the dangers are and how to counter them.

Insects constitute very serious delicacies in my country. The ones that we eat without any qualms are white ants.White ants are white feathered ants that fly either at twi light, in the evening or at exactly middnight-whatever the case, they are collected with a lot of excitement by both men, women and children-they are usually dried in the morning sun, some are grilled in oil to constitute breakfast. Some people chew it fresh and direct from source(anthills) with wings, others crush the fresh ants into paste and cook them in balls of mashed fresh white ants, others prefer it dried and boiled in tomatoes before having it seasoned with peanuts! White ants as a delicacy is so important to my community that only exceptionally important visitors are reserved white ant dishes-women who truely love their husbands give it as a surprise dish just when they are getting to bed, it adds a little love and such nights are usually special! The other insects eaten are grasshoppers, these are not as popular as white ants. I need to add that white ants live in ant hills and they are flying insects that are attracted to any form of light in the night during the early rains of the year.
