How do you cope up with the sudden death of a close friend?

I don't handle death very well and so far have been lucky that I have never lost a close friend to death . I am not sure how I would react as I don't handle it well when it is even someone I did not know well and know for sure I would take this very hard . I hope this is not something I will have to deal with for many more years to come .
