does smoking contribute to heart problems? help?

i just wanna know, i just had a conversation with my auntie, awhile ago and we're talking about our friend who has a heart problem. and this good friend of ours, just cannot stop smoking you know. he got a heart problem. yeah, and now he's in the hospital and then, still he cannot stop smoking.
how can i help him?

could be just some sort of oral fixation.
just give him something else to put in his mouth
