Color Wonder - Is it so great?

In the states we have a line of products by Crayola called ColorWonder. These products are all clear until you use them on thier special paper. While I think the idea is nice; I don't think they are practical. So if your child wants to draw, color, paint etc and they are out of paper then they are out of luck? I will not be buying them as I feel it is important for my child to learn what he can and cannot draw on. What if he was used to Color Wonder and went to someone's house that didn't have that? He wouldn't know not to go off the paper and could make a huge mess. As I said, the concept is nice but I don't feel practical. Plus they are rather expensive. What are your opinions?

I think that they are too expensive as well, if they want us mothers to buy them they'd need to be more cost effective. I though into getting this for my son, because he is too young to understand the difference. When I went to get some and saw the outrageous prices I thought to myslef " i'd rather clean up the crayons". Its just another product that they make for mother's that don't want to have to teach them draw on this, not on this. They don't want to have to walk around and pick up the crayons after they've been thrown all over the living room. Well all i've got to say is this save yourself 10$ and pick up the mess, or teach your kid to pick them up when they're done.

You can get them on sale all of the time and most kids know the difference between color wonders and regular colors. They are great! We have them...lots of them. And the kids know the difference and get the appropriate paper to use with them. I think they are great especially for the younger kids! You don't have to worry about markers everywhere!

Personally I love them. We use them alot when we travel to my husband's grandparents. They live about 4 hours from our house. My little one can sit in her seat and color in the coloring books. We as parents have no worry about her accidently getting marker on the leather seats or her clothes that we want to look nice when we get there. I think like most products in the world some people need them and some people think they are a waste. They must be selling and Crayola making money on them though because a year ago you could barely find anything and now they have a whole section of product at the store.

Yes I will give you that. On a car ride or something that is a good idea. At home though I think old fashioned things are better. This way they learn where it is ok to write and where it isn't.

I agree, it's a nice idea but is not going to teach children there are right places to color and wrong places. My grandson saw this on TV and of course wanted it, saying "Grandma I need that so I don't make messes on your walls". I told him no he doesn't need that he just needs to remember where the coloring books are and only color in those - he went to the shelf and found his coloring books :)

Yeah they do seem to make kids think that they NEED the product. I don't trust the stuff anyway. I mean ok you have clear fingerpaint and it gets on the carpet ... it doesn't just vanish; there is something there. I wouldn't want that stuff all over my house anyway.

Well I think they are great, not because they don't mark anything else but the paper, but because a marker that looks white comes out as a different colour, my daughter loves them and calls them her magic markers LOL. Though we don't use them often, we stick to the more standard non-magical variety more often then not.

ewhh I would agree, my kids would make such a mess and they are too young to realize the concept still of what is actually happening here. I too will not be buying this one - it seems to me that crayola yeah has a great idea, but needs to remember we have little ones at home still too. so make something more fun for all us to use plus sales will be much better too. Crayola is great though with all of their lovely colors.

Thanks for replying. I am glad I am not the only one that feels the way I do. I often feel like I am in the minority with my thoughts.

We had some to try, ok if you can get the kids to understand, but once the pens get into each other they can change colour and if you run out of book you have left over pens you cannot use anywhere else. I found that the book and pens became separated unless I was really careful, I thought it would be good for my special needs child but it didn't work out as well as Id hoped. I'd rather have cheap felt tips as it is easier to keep track of them but a very good idea for in the car or on holidays.

Hi! My daughter got the color wonder finger paints for a gift. I think it's disgusting! Ewww! First, it's like making your child stick their fingers in vaseline, then the paper gets all soaked like it's been soaking in grease. It's really gross. I don't plan on ever buying those again. :-)

thats wonderful like a magic lipstick...well anyway..is there any writing of what color is it suppose to be?? have you seen it and try it?? if no then its not practical for the children...its better for them to use the conventional crayola...

I have thought about purchasing them a time or two but I agree with your thought s about teaching your children not to write where they are not supposed too.I think that is lesson all parents have to go through and the marks on the walls are the rite of passage.

I just went through this rite of passage last weekend when my 2 1/2 year old decided to 'draw' on the wall. He hasn't tried since though so maybe telling him not to do it actually sunk in? Doubt I can be so lucky LOL.

They do sound good. But as you said if they use anything other than the colourwonder it will make a mess. It would be a great idea for kids who know how to stay in the lines.

I don't think the idea is exactly original to be honest. There were color pens that were available when I was a child that were one color when you drew with them, but you used a "white" pen and the ink turned a different color. It seems to me that Crayola took that concept and just made it so your kids can draw on special paper for the same kind of idea. I t's all about making money, and God knows Crayola have been around for years. Maybe they felt it was time to inject some fresh ideas into the name. However, when I can teach my kids to draw on "normal" paper with "normal" pens for less money than these new Crayola ones, I'll stick with the "normal" method.

I like color wonder for the fact that they can not make messes with it anywhere. And my girls have used color wonder things, only because someone bought them for birthdays or something like that. But I can honestly say that I have never went and bought refil things for them. They use what came with it and then that is the end of it. And like you I want my kids to know what they can and can't write on. They basically know, well my 4 year old knows, now I am working with my 2 year old on this issue. She is learning but yeah I want her to know, instead of her using color wonder.

I like the color wonder but only in certain circumstances. Like if we are at my parents house they work out because I dont want them coloring all off the place. But at home we just use regular paint or crayons or markers and paper. It's not really all that fun to have to stay in the lines! Also I think they are way overpriced for a cheap coloring book and some markers.

They're nice for certain times, like when you're in a car. But I agree that for everyday use, they're far too expensive. I think for normal coloring & painting, you're best to just set your child up in a safe, cleanable area.

My son got one of the Color Wonder coloring books and set of markers for Christmas this past year, and while it's nice to know the markers will not mark on anything but that paper, I agree that (by itself) it doesn't really teach children about where they should and should not color. I also think these markers somewhat stifle a child's creativity if it's the only type of coloring/writing utensil ever given to the child to use. And yes, they're rather expensive, too. However, if children are given a variety of writing/ coloring utensils and are taught from the start that they're not to color on anything but paper/coloring books, then I see no real problem with allowing children to also use the Color Wonder markers.
