Never wear white shoes between Labor Day and Memorial Day

Easter / Memorial Day Shoes - We always got new white shoes for Easter but couldn't wear them after that until The Memorial Day Parade. Then we wore them on Sundays to church until Labor Day or they didn't fit anymore...lol

I was taught this from basically birth. We were never allowed to wear white shoes, pants or dresses before Memorial Day(5/28/07) or after Labor Day (9/03/07). The exception was always Easter Sunday. I don't know where this started or why. I can't seem to find much information other than it's a fashion faux pas. I know not all countries celebrate Memorial Day or Labor Day but do you also have a white clothes or shoes rule? Does anyone follow this "rule" anymore?

Hello mrs. mari61960, Its a peculiar but funny ritual i would say , please feel free to enlighten me about the reason for doing such an act. No in India we dont have such a rule for white dress , but surely cannot wear black in a happy occation (though not used now-a-days though).

Well I would love to tell you where it all began and why....but no one really seems to know... I guess it was an fashion etiquette type rule from years past. Some say it may have come from being a seasonal dress code of sorts, as we have all four seasons in the US but I cannot find the true answer anywhere...lol

I don't think the white shoe thing is enforced by the fashion police anymore. I still go to what they call "winter white". Also I noticed on What Not To Wear that there is a sign that says "white shoes permitted after Labour Day"

I remember the rule. I seldom had the choice, just wore my school shoes, but then for Easter we got white shoes, wore them Easter and put them away for summer for church. Got black shoes for fall, because I probably had outgrown the white ones. By the time i was a teen colored shoes were popular and cheap and I never had white shoes. Same for white clothes. If you indeed wore something light colored in the winter, it was winter white, aka cream.

I was also raised with the same rule but I never pratice it any more. I even wore a lot of white in the winter before it became fashionably acceptable

I don't practice it myself, now that I'm an adult. But then I don't usually wear white shoes or clothes any more either...lol

I don't really pay much attention to this rule anymore. Of course I really don't wear that much white anyways so it doesn't really matter to me. I'm not sure of many people that do follow this rule anymore. I haven't really heard many of my mans say anything about it.
