PLEASE! DO NOT buy a live bunny, chick or duckling for Easter unless you live on a farm and know how to raise them!
Our local shelter spent last week condtructing a temporary large pen behind their adoption building to ready for the annual "fallout" of dozens of such livestock 6 months after the holiday. One shelter worker told me that once they lose their baby appeal, all of a sudden it is too much to be cared for by the owners or the animals werent allowed to live in their human dwellings at all! She went on to tell me how some come in sick, malnutritious and practically starved to death because no one knew how to take care of them properly!
Chocolate bunnies and marshmellow peeps are the best gifts - even as toys. Dont allow the live babies become another "pet mistake" statistic.

I am giving a hermit crab as an Easter gift...along with a fishing rod and acessories, and Easter basket with treat in it. No peeps. No Bunnies. No Ducks. I have a duck when I was little. It followed me all over the place. I was scared of it.

It is a sad story. You are right only people in the country who have room for animal pens should buy these little creatures and they should also be informed as to how to feed and care for them. Thank heavens where I live in the city it is no longer allowed to sell chicks and ducks in the pet stores. A good thing too, with the risk of contracting bird flu if you live in too close proximity to the birds. I have seen plenty of bunnies though in the animal shelter.
Hopefully most people will stick to chocolate bunnies for Easter.
