Home Security - How do you protect your house?

A friend of mine woke up at 5 in the morning because she heard some noises on their second floor deck. At first she thought it was racoons or squirrels but then she decided to check. When she opened the door to the deck she came face to face with a young man who was in the process of ripping up the screen door. (Lucky there was one). She quickly closed the door, and woke her husband who called the police. The young man cowered in a corner of the deck. He did not want to jump down two floors and they still can't figure out how he got up there in the first place. The young man was arrested and it turned out he was a drug addict. Some people here have motion sensors in the house, and motion sensor lights outside close to doors and windows, some people have latches on all their doors and windows, some people have monitored alarm systems and some people have dogs. So how do you protect your home?
