My friend couldn't keep her Sugar Glider anymore so she gave him to me. He is about 5 years old, and I was wondering how I would get him used to me. If anybody has any clues how I can do this, please let me know.

I've always wanted a sugar glider. (I didn't know they could last that long!) Sometimes animals will get used to you faster if you're the one to change their cage, bring them food, and change their water the most. The more they see they have to depend on you and trust you. the faster they'll get used to you.

They can live, in captivity, up to 15-16 years. In the wild they live 4-6 years. So captivity is best for them to survive. Thanks for responding.

Facts about gliders:-

Glider is a type of possum that lives in forests in New Guinea and northern and eastern Australia. Gliders can glide through the air from branch to branch or from tree to tree. A fold of furry skin connects the front and rear legs on each side of the animal's body. When the glider extends its legs, the skin serves as "wings" for gliding. The animal's long tail helps steer during the glide. A glider's fur is grayish on the back and gray, orange, yellow, creamy white, or white on the belly. Gliders are also called gliding possums.

Gliders are marsupials. Female marsupials bear tiny, poorly developed young. Most gliders give birth to one or two young. The young are carried in a pouch on the mother's belly until they develop more fully. Gliders eat mainly leaves, blossoms, and sap. They nest in the hollows of trees and are active mainly at night.

The largest glider, the greater glider, weighs as much as 33/4 pounds (1.7 kilograms) and travels as far as 350 feet (105 meters) in one glide. The smallest glider, the pygmy glider, weighs as little as 1/3 ounce (10 grams). It glides as far as 65 feet (20 meters).

Scientific classification. Most gliders are in the family Petauridae. The scientific name for the greater glider is Petauroides volans. The pygmy glider belongs to the family Burramyidae. It is Acrobates pygmaeus.

Sugar gliders are great pets for adults! I have 4 and my husband has two. I hand raised two of mine because the parents were trying to eat them. The best way to get him use to you and to get him to bond to you is to get a bonding pouch. Some pet stores have them, but you will probably have better luck finding them online. During the day while he sleeps, carry him around in the bonding pouch. Put it under your shirt so he is close to your skin. He will be able to smell you and here you talking. Also, hand feed him treats. And if he bites you or crabs at you, don't pull away. Tell him no in a stern voice. If you pull away he knows that that is all he has to do to get you to leave him alone and he won't bond with you. Talk to him every day and make sure you spend time with him. But remember to baby proof your home before you let him out of his cage. And don't let him out and about until he gets use to you unless you can keep him in a confined room where he has no where to hide and you can easily get him. I hope that helps! Good luck with your new friend!
