When is the right age for stopping use of a sippy cup and training your child to use a regular small child's cup at the table? My son is 2 now, not sure if he should be weaned from the sippy cup? Would love to know what everyone's thoughts on this are!

My son is nearly three and he still uses sippy cups around the house. It just saves on a whole lot of spills. However, at mealtimes he uses a regular plastic cup. So he knows how to use a regular cup, but we just use the convenience of a sippy cup when he's running around the house or in the car, just to save on messes.

We had the same question last year when our son was 2. It seemed like he should be using a regular cup and yet I enjoyed the mess free ease of the sippy! Without any specific training from us, he is using a regular cup just fine. If he is sitting at the table, I will give him the regular cup and there are very few problems. If he wants something to drink outside of mealtimes, I give him a sippy cup that he can take with him. This is also due to the fact that he has a younger brother who would spill a cup if it was left where he could reach it! Good luck to you!

my oldest is 2 1/2, when he was 18 months old, we started having him use a cup, he loved it, but we still used the sippy cup here and there. When he turned 2, we reserved the sippy cup for the car and then right before bedtime, when he has warm milk. Now we just use it before bedtime. I suggest you wean him soon. He's old enough to get the hang of a regular cup. We found some cups, that had a sippy cup lid, but when you took it off, it was a regular cup, It's great, It doesn't have any valves either, which is much easier to clean. I really hate sippy cups, because they are so difficult to clean, milk always gets stuck in the nooks and cranny's and you throw away alot of valves. With my youngest (seven months) we had planned on starting him on a sippy cup and weaning to a cup by twelve months, but he refuses to use a sippy cup, will only use a regular cup like his big brother, so it makes it easier on us. The cups with straws are great, and usually come with lids, that's what we use in the car. Good luck.

I think a good age to completely stop using is abuot 2 and a half to 3 years old. I can't remember when I stopped using. I think it was about 2 or so. I think every kid is different though, but you definitely want to completely take it out before they get to the age of 4. I would say 4 MAX!! That's if the kid is just "stuck" on it. Some kids can get that way about things.

For all three of my children, I stopped sippies at or before their 18 month birthday. I play a little trick on them-it's not as bad as it sounds. They go visit their grandparents for a weekend and when they get home, all their sippies have disappeared. I don't know how it happens, it just does (at least that's what I tell the kids). They never get mad at me or upset in any way. They just accept it and move on to regular cups. It seems to work every time. I hope this helps.

My children used a sippy cup at meal from about 12 to about 18 months, then until age two they just used it when we were out and about to limit spills.

My son is one and uses sippy cups from 8 months. He can use tumblers and water bottles now.But still I will make him continue using sippy cup until he is about 2 year old.I prefer my child to eat his food himself as early as possible.

He is still pretty young and sippy cups dont do any damage so keep on with it for another year or so if you want and then try him on a regular cup and see how he does.

I was researching when to stop using a sippy cup for my 2 yr old son, I have read online (dentist website) that sippy cups do attribute to tooth decay the same as bottles and pacifers. They may also have some effect on the spacing in the teeth. I was unable to find an exact age when you should stop using sippy cups all together but read you should limit a sippy cup to only water once your child is able to drink from a cup.

My son can use a regular cup without any problems, I just have a problem with the mess! :) Guess I will have to deal with the mess for the sake of his teeth!

My little girl is 3 years old and still uses a sippy cup. She knows how to drink from a regular cup but the main cup she uses is a sippy cup. I like to use them because they are spill proof and it gives her the ability to get a drink whenever she wants. I do not have to worry about her spilling her drink. I don't think your son is missing out on anything if you let him use a sippy cup. Don't they grow up too fast anyway?
I say let him have it as long as he wants...but that is just my opinion.

I agree. I think that they will let you know when they are ready to give up the sippy cup. My son stopped using the bottle on his own (at about 14 months) and stopped taking the soother on his own (at about 9 months). I will let him stop using the sippy cup on his own (he is currently 17months).
