The coverage area for our convenience is assumed to be hexagaonal in shape. That is why because of these hexagonal cells ,cell phone is called so. Scientists started wondering which shape to assume. They had chosen this hexagonal cell due to it's large effective area and also it does not contain overlapping difficulties in designing. You should study mobile communications book for etter understanding.

Cell is the name of the base station coverage area ... when you call usung a cell phone your phone receive signals from a cell and if you move, from cell to cell Hence CELL phone ... also cellular phone cells phones are also commonly called mobile phone because you can be "mobile" with them Finally do not mistake cordless phone and mobile or cell phone ... check this link if you want more details : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/cell_phone

the cell in cellphone is actually "cellular" .. may be the term has an association with a thing that works using a cell (battery) for its operation ..incidentally the mobile phone phone works on lithium cells.
