I don't mean a house exactly, but a town or city or country. What would you look for? I'd like a place where a lot of the businesses are essentially creative- like galleries and crafted goods stores, places where artists live and psychics and I love tre lined streets and old houses, but in so many places in the US those are taken over by really rich people. Your basic artist is not normally one of them. So its always a kind of scramble to find a warm welcoming neighborhood and enjoy it before it becomes fashionable. what do you consider the most important elements in choosing a new place to live?

I like the quiet areas. Where you can walk through the neighborhood at night and feel safe. A place where if I let the kids go outside to play, I am not fearful of a car suddenly come screaming down the street out of nowhere.
I also like a lot of trees. That way on a hot summer's day, one can just sit and rest and talk.
I like a park to be near so that I can walk to it with the kids and let them play.
I don't like a lot of traffic. I don't like a lot of stores. I want their school close. But I also want to live in a neighborhood where everyone cares. The kind of neighbors that if Johnny from down the street falls down, they will run out to see if he is ok.
I am that kind of nieghbor...but mine are not.
So, if you find the kind of place I want to live, will you let me know?
Because I have lived from the east coast to the west coast...and there was only one place that I was happy...and then she moved.

I found exactly this in Wilmington, NC in the historic district. Peope had swings on their porches and sat out in the late afternoon , early evening and chatted with neighbors and people walking their pets. I was so happy there. I could get to a mall or major shopping in less than twenty minutes, or to a dockside restaurant or garden shop or artsy kinds of places I loved walking. but the neighborhood had a strong sense of connectedness. Many many of the people living there were thansplants so the feeling of small town thing that shuts out newcomers didn't happen there. they welcomed new people knowing that each of us aided the economy in myriad wqays. I left to be closer to my grandchildren and within months they were transferred to another state. I have a lot of regret about that. It has a temperate climate being at sea level, and gets a dash of snow in the winter. The houses are very very old and well kept.

Wow Arcadian!!! That sounds like a perfect place to be!
I bet that was a beautiful place to be and live!!! :)
If I ever get the chance to drive that way again, I will be sure to look it up. :)
Sorry you family was transferred after you moved. I know how that is. We got transferred not long after my partner's mother moved closer to us. Oh how bad I felt about having to leave!!!!
