My mom has a Great Pyrenees pup who is about 15 months old. He is a gorgeous pup. But he barks a lot. He is very observant. He notices if something is out of place or something new is around. But sometimes he seems to bark for no reason. My mom has had some problems establishing her authority with him so this does not help. She does not have the money to take him to obedience training. She said she is going to buy him a "bark collar" and I really do not want her to. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how she can minimize the amount of barking without having to buy him a "bark collar"?

You should really have her watch the dog whisperer it is the solution to all of my questions when it comes to my dog. He mainly says that if she doesn't show him that she is the extreme authority and stop the barking as soon as it happens, everytime it happens then he will keep doing it. I know it sounds silly but I give eddie timeouts in his kennel if he doesn't listen. Then I bring him out and let him go back to his routine, if he does it again I assert authority and if he doesn't listen then timeout. Dogs are huge on persistance and routine. I am not an expert but this is what I learned with animal shows and books. But the Dog whisperer is a god send it makes you feel like you are not the only one out there with these problems. Barking is huge on that show.

I do know that she watches the show a lot. She loves it.

Maybe her biggest problem is not his behavior...maybe it's just her response to his behaviors. Maybe she is not consistent/persistent enough with him. I know he definitely has the alpha male thing going on. She lives alone so he also feels the need to protect her as that breed is very loyal. I know she ocassionally gives him time-outs in the garage. But I don't think that it's used consistently enough with him.

It's hard since I live 3 hours away from her (used to be 6 hours until we moved). But I did tell her recently that he does not listen or respond to her like she is the authority figure. He definitely thinks he runs the place....and well he probably does.

Get a shock collar. We have one and it did wonders for all three of our dogs. Shock collars have 10 different levels of shock and also a warning sound to use first before the shock. It took a few times before our dogs got the gist of what we expected out of them. It's very safe or they wouldn't be sold in stores. We had to get one for it was our last resort. Now we don't use it at all for they're all trained well.

Really? So you totally recommend them then...

Now do you think one of the collars with just the high pitched noise is safer than the shock one or?

I just feel like it would be cruel to use a shock collar. Then again...I don't know a whole lot about them. How did you transition them from having the collar to not having it. What if they were barking to warn you of something? Now they are being shocked for barking....any more insight into the collars?
