Do you think that the detroit lions will a champshipship this season?  

Not very likely. Remember, the Lions are in the NFC North, which includes reigning the reigning NFC Champs, the Bears, and a surprisingly upstart Green Bay team which could see a bit more improvement. They might be better, especially with Mike Martz having a whole year now with the personnel and picking up Tatum Bell... but I just don't think they have the defense or the overall talent to compete with the top of the conference (Chicago, Seattle, Dallas, Philadelphia).

No way. I saw every game last year, and they were awful, just awful. Mike Martz may have made their offense better, but their qb sucks! It only added insult to injury when Harrington and Garcia enjoyed success with their respective teams last year, which suggested qb wasn't our only problem. It's a shame because the Bears (I don't care if they made it to the Super Bowl) suck. They didn't play a real team but once during the regular season (The Patriots...and lost), and they didn't play a good playoff team until they faced Seattle with all of their stars healthy. Their schedule was cake, hell I coulda put together a squad of my buddies and competed against the teams they played. Their road to the super bowl was nothing special. The NFC north is weak, and the fact that Detroit can't compete with it means the team is downright pathetic. This pains me a great deal to admit this considering I'm a diehard fan.

We better hope that Marinelli can work some magic on the defense. Offense should be exciting to watch, but we have some major questions at linebacker and corner.

Even as big a Lions fan as I am, I would be very surprised if we finally came out of the woodwork and got into the playoffs. I am the "let's see what happens" kind of fan who doesn't get his hopes up or dumps on the team when I have yet to even see them. I have given Marinelli another year to see what can become of the team with him. I am, however, adamant that Millen HAS to go.

I don't even think they'll go 8-8. They are a terrible team. It doesn't matter what players they get. What the team needs is a new owner that cares about winning, a new GM (stating the obvious), and a winning attitude. I think they expect to lose sometimes. I think the Draft is more exciting to Lions fans since they always pick so high.

We've seen teams do a complete turnaround in only a year but the Lions will not be one of those teams in my opinion.

The Lions won't have a chance at winning a championship because they're only going to have 4 wins or less. They have consistently been terrible since Barry Sanders retired. Everyone praise the Millen Army.

Not this year, but they will bust through the cellar door of the NFC North and establish themselves as a respectable organization. I think, at most, they'll either make or break .500 this season, but next year....Playoffs or bust.

I'm doubting it. Not with the level of competion stacked up against them. Granted I have'nt heard much about the Lions, don't really know anything about them. But from what I can see, its not likely.

Ha ha...just looking at some old Lions posts. I think they will be competitive in a couple of years with all the draft picks they have coming up. I don't see them doing too much in the off-season until a new regime is in place.
The Lions need to start by getting some quality- not superstar- DB's and Linebackers. Imagine going into this season they could have easily had a starting LB corps of Takeo Spikes, Ernie Sims and Buster Davis. They cut Davis (for the second time?!!!!), didn't sign Spikes and stuck with Sims and who else? Paris Lennon and a bunch of other scrubs. They have no established CBs, with the exception of Leigh Bodden who was great before he got here, but has no safety support, or anyone else in the secondary who can cover anything more than their own shadow. Dewayne Smith is the only serviceable DLineman. They need help EVERYWHERE on D, both in starting and bench personnel.
On offense it's not much better- NO QB- yet, NO OLinemen worth keeping (maybe Cherilus, who hasn't been great and has had moments of awfulness),Calvin Johnson at WR and Kevin Smith and Rudi Johnson at RB, that's IT.
With some draft help in the defensive secondary and linbacking corps the Lions can hopefully put a little more competitive unit together that can hopefully find ways to get off the field quicker, more often, which would help to get the offense at least more chances. It's no quick fix though. The Lions could be competitive in the 2010 season,with the lifting of the salary cap, but it will all hinge upon the coaching/management staff they select and how well (or how not terrible) they draft.
